He maintains a focus on property insurance, business interruption issues, CGL insurance matters, builders risk matters, commercial general liability insurance disputes, fraud, and various other types of cases. Prior to his time with Cozen O'Connor, he had been a partner and associate at another law firm.
The son of Gordon Ralph Pate and Shirley Jean Pate, Mr. Pate was born in Beaumont, Texas, in 1958. Inspired to pursue a vocation in the field of law by his father, who was also a lawyer, he matriculated at Vanderbilt University, graduating magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in 1980. He then completed a Juris Doctor in 1983 at the School of Law. While in law school, he was Research Editor for the Vanderbilt Journal. Mr. Pate is a member of the Phi Beta Kappa honor society, which is the oldest academic honor society in the United States and is considered by many to be its most prestigious.
After completing his law degree, Mr. Pate clerked for the Hon. Joe J. Fisher for the U.S. District Court of Texas. For a decade, beginning in 1984, he served as an associate at Fulbright and Joworski. In 1994 he was made a partner at the firm, serving in that capacity until 2017, when it had become Norton Rose Fulbright.
Mr. Pate has contributed a number of articles to professional law journals and books. He has contributed to New Appleman on Insurance Law, West's Law and Practice of Insurance Coverage, and Electronic Disclosure in International Arbitration. He has also taught as an adjunct professor at the University of Houston Law School, and has found time to operate the S.P. Pate Ranch in Leon County, Texas.
Mr. Pate is revered by his peers as a highly knowledgeable expert within in his field. As a result, he has held a number of prominent leadership positions at various legal organizations. He currently serves on the Board of Regents of the American College of Coverage Counsel. Mr. Pate has been a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates since 2005 and was elected to the American Law Institute in 2012. He formerly served on the Board of Directors of the Federation of Defense and Corporate Counsel, the Texas Young Lawyers Association, and the Houston Young Lawyers Association. He has also been named a fellow of the Houston Bar Foundation, the Texas Bar Foundation, and the American Bar Foundation.
In light of his service and accomplishments, Mr. Pate has received a number of accolades throughout his career. Such honors include a Client Choice Award, the Thomas Segalla Award from the American College of Coverage Counsel, the Olshan Award from the Federation of Defense and Corporate Counsel, and the John Appleman Award. He has also been included in multiple editions of Who's Who in American Law, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, Who's Who in Finance and Industry, and Who's Who in the World.
An avid history buff, he has written several articles for historical journals. He exercises this passion through his membership with the Society of Colonial Wars and the Sons of the Republic of Texas. He has served as President of the Paul Carrington Chapter of Sons of the American Revolution. He serves as a Trustee of the Texas Supreme Court Historical Society, and has written historical articles for the Texas Supreme Court Historical Society Journal and the Handbook of Texas.
In his spare time, Mr. Pate enjoys outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing and farming.
