Interested in theoretical physics since college, Dr. Friedman prepared for his career by earning a Bachelor of Engineering Physics from Cornell in 1961, following this with a Ph.D. in Physics from MIT in 1966. He commenced his career as a National Science Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow at the Niels Bohr Institute of the University of Copenhagen in 1966 before becoming an Instructor at Princeton University in 1967. He then worked at the University of Wisconsin-Madison beginning in 1970, progressing from Assistant Professor to Full Professor. He earned the title of Professor Emeritus in 2004.
In addition to his primary academic positions, Dr. Friedman was a Big Ten CIC faculty exchange Professor to Michigan State University in 1981, and was a Visiting Professor at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory and MSU in 1985. He was an invited visitor to the Hahn Meitner Institute, Berlin, in 1986 and 1988, and to G.A.N.I.L, Laboratory, Caen, France, in 1991 and 1998, among other domestic and international positions. Extended academic relationships include those of Adjunct Professor at Michigan State University from 1986 to 2004 and Affiliate Professor at the University of Washington from 2006 to 2010.
Exhibiting field-related expertise, Dr. Friedman co-edited "Theoretical Methods in Medium Energy Heavy Ion Physics" in 1978, (Plenum Press), and co-wrote "Thinking About Equations: A Practical Guide to Developing Mathematical Intuition in the Physical Sciences and Engineering" in 2009, (Wiley). He served on the Program Advisory Committee for the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory from 1994 to 1998. He has also been a referee for numerous journals, and has published over 100 peer reviewed articles plus contributed papers and talks in his field.
Due to his undergraduate accomplishments he was awarded a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship in 1961. Dr. Friedman was a grantee of the National Science Foundation from 1978 to 2003. He was elected a Fellow of the American Physical Society in 1989, and served as a Fellow in the Advanced Study Institute at Indiana University from 1997 to 1998. Dr. Friedman was honored in the fifth edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
