Mr. Robertson upheld a wonderful career that began in 1962 as a teacher and principal at the Allen-White Elementary School in Whiteville, TN. Accepting the opportunity to then serve as the assistant principal at Central High School in Bolivar, TN, in 1970 for another four years, he then moved into health care as the assistant superintendent at the Western Mental Health Institute, a psychiatric hospital in Bolivar, TN. Remaining in health care for another near 20 years, Mr. Robertson became the superintendent for the Nat T. Winston Development Center and the Western Mental Health Institute, commissioner for the Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities, vice president of behavioral health for Pathways, and a behavioral health consultant. Upon his retirement in 1997, he began yet another career, this time in local government as the executive director of the Southwest Tennessee Development District.
Within the community, Mr. Robertson has been very active serving as a longtime member of the Hardeman County Commission since 1981. He is a former commissioner for the Department of Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities, chairman of the board of directors of the Hardeman County Developmental Services Center, president of the Whiteville Civic League and chair of the Whiteville Rural Housing.
Mr. Robertson is a member and former chairman of the Southeastern Association of Mental Deficiency, and a member of the Institute of Hospital and Community Psychiatry and the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. He was also elected to serve as the former president of the National Association for State Mental Health Program Directors by his peers. He is a lifetime member and former president of the Boliver chapter of the Tennessee State University Alumni Association, member and former president of the Civitan Club, the Shriners Lodge and the Silver Star Lodge, and lifetime member of Kappa Alpha Psi.
The recipient of several awards for his accomplishments, Mr. Robertson notably received a 2014 Ronald Cunningham Community Service Award, several Humanitarian of the Year Awards by The Arc of the Mid-South between 2010 and 2018, and an Outstanding Young Teacher Award by the Hardeman County Jaycees in 1972. He has been cited in several editions of Who's Who Among Human Services Professionals, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, and Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
Mr. Robertson completed both a Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts at Tennessee State University, as well as completed postgraduate coursework at Memphis State University. He is a certified teacher and educational superintendent. Married to Hugholene Ellison since 1963, Mr. Robertson has two children and two grandchildren. He enjoys being active by fishing, taking photography and working in his garden. He also loves to read and watch sports.
