With 40 years of professional experience, Ms. Gurney retired in 1991, having been an English teacher with Shenendehowa Central Schools since 1970. Prior to obtaining this role, she was an elementary teacher with Mary C. Howse Elementary School from 1965 to 1970 and an organizer of the Principal Migrant School from 1960 to 1965. Earlier in her career, she was an elementary teacher with Pine Hill Elementary School from 1954 to 1955 and with Verona Public Schools from 1951 to 1954 and again from 1955 to 1958.
Ms. Gurney began her career as a student at Montclair State University, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in 1951. After obtaining some experience in the field, she returned to her studies at the University at Albany, earning a Master of Arts in 1973. She is certified in the state of New York in teaching English, elementary, preschool, social studies, reading, alternative education and remedial English.
A respected voice in her areas of interest, Ms. Gurney has been affiliated with a number of organizations in her community. She is a member of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, the National Council of Teachers of English, the New York State Teachers Association, the Shenendehowa Teachers Association, Kiwanis International and the Holiday Rambler Recreational Vehicle Club.
Throughout her career, Ms. Gurney has been recognized for her contributions. She was named a facilitator by the Capital District World of Difference Campaign and she received an Excellence in Education Award from Shenendehowa Central Schools. She has been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who of American Women.
