Providing professional development and consulting services to leaders in both the public and private sectors, particularly in the field of education, it also provides speakers and facilitators for institutes, workshops, and conferences that focus on one or more of "The Spiritual Principles of Leadership" that were identified by Dr. Houston and co-founder Dr. Sokolow. Committed to playing a catalytic role in shaping the future of public education by partnering with other interested leaders and organizations, the CFEL serves as a cyber cafe to connect individuals and groups committed to making our world a better place.
Together, Dr. Houston and Dr. Sokolow have co-authored a series of books, including "The Empowering Leader: 12 Core Values to Supercharge Your Leadership Skills" in 2017, "The Wise Leader: Doing the Right Things for the Right Reasons" in 2013, and "The Spiritual Dimension of Leadership: 8 Key Principles to Leading More Effectively" in 2006. Dr. Houston has also authored "Giving Wings to Children's Dreams" in 2010 and "Articles of Faith and Hope for Public Education" in 1997, among others.
Dr. Houston previously devoted 14 years to the American Association of School Administrators (AASA) in Arlington, VA, as the organization's sixth executive director. The AASA is a premier association for school system leaders and serves as the national voice for public education and district leadership on Capitol Hill. His extensive background in education also included working as the superintendent for Riverside Unified Schools in California, Tucson Unified School District in Arizona and Princeton Regional Schools in New Jersey, assistant superintendent for Birmingham City Schools in Alabama, principal for Summit City Schools in New Jersey, and teacher for Chapel Hill City Schools in North Carolina. Additionally, Dr. Houston was a visiting professor at Brigham Young University and Princeton University.
A member and past president of his local Rotary, Dr. Houston also spent time as time as the president of the New Jersey Interscholastic Association and the Southwest Regional Laboratories Board. He also served on the board of directors for the Princeton Library, Tucson Library and his local YMCA.
Dr. Houston was twice named One of 100 Outstanding Executive Educators in North America in 1984 and 1993, was the recipient of a Richard Green Leadership Award by the Council of Great City Schools in 1991, and was named Executive Educator of the Month in 1985. He has been cited in approximately 30 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, and Who's Who in the West.
Obtaining a Bachelor of Arts from Ohio State University in 1966, Dr. Houston then completed a Master of Arts in Teaching at the University of North Carolina in 1968 and Doctor of Education at Harvard University in 1973. He became certified in advanced study through Harvard University in 1971 and has since received an honorary doctorate from Duquesne University in 1997.
Born in Springfield, OH, to parents Paul Doran and Irene Almeda Sansom, Dr. Houston's father was a minister.
