STONY BROOK, NY, December 19, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Douglas J. Futuyma, PhD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Futuyma celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
An esteemed evolutionary biologist, Dr. Futuyma is recognized as distinguished professor emeritus of ecology and evolution by the State University of New York. Initially working as an assistant professor in 1969, he later served as an associate professor from 1976 to 1983, at which point he earned the post of professor and distinguished professor in 2001. During his tenure in academia, Dr. Futuyma notably served as the chair of the department of ecology and evolutionary biology at the University of Michigan between 2002 and 2003, in which he was noted as a Lawrence B. Slobodkin collegiate professor between 2003 and 2004.
Known for his research on speciation and population biology, particularly the evolutionary interactions between herbivorous insects, their plant hosts and the implications for evolution of host specificity, Dr. Futuyma has been very successful in his field. His research also centered on the population biology of herbivorous insects and the evolution of their affiliation with host plants. In addition to his studies, he has also been renowned for his efforts in public outreach against creationism, which is the religious belief that the universe and life originated from specific acts of divine creation, as opposed to the scientific conclusion that they came about through natural processes. Dr. Futuyma held the posts of president of the Society for the Study of Evolution, the American Society of Naturalists, and the American Institute of Biological Sciences, and was elected a member of the National Academy of the Sciences.
Dr. Futuyma is the author of two very popular undergraduate textbooks on evolution, "Evolutionary Biology" and "Evolution." He is also the author of the 1982 book, "Science on Trial: The Case for Evolution," which discusses the creation-evolution controversy. Regarded as highly effective in making the argument for evolution and as a tool for discussing the topic with those who are uncertain, it was also reviewed as suitable for use in undergraduate education. Dr. Futuyma edited and co-edited several other publications as well and continues to serve as the associate editor for the "Annual Review of Ecology, Evolution and Systematics" since 1992 and as editor since 2002.
A longtime research associate at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, Dr. Futuyma is also an elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the United States National Academy of Sciences. Selected as a fellow by the J.S. Guggenheim Memorial Foundation in 1992, he further accepted research grants from the National Science Foundation beginning in 1974. Furthermore, he was the recipient of the Sewall Wright Award from the American Society of Naturalists in 1997 and the Leidy Award from the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University in 2012. Dr. Futuyma has been notably cited in several editions of Who's Who in America and Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
Dr. Futuyma pursued an education at Cornell University, earning an undergraduate degree in 1963. He continued his studies with a Master's degree in 1966 from the University of Michigan. Dr. Futuyma concluded his academic efforts at the University of Michigan in 1969, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy in zoology.
