A renowned health facility administrator, diagnostic industry executive and serial entrepreneur, Mr. Knesel is currently the Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of Select Laboratory Partners, Inc. of Greensboro, NC.. He began his career as a technologist at the American Biological Control Laboratory and a senior technologist at Englewood Hospital, both of New Jersey. In 1969, Mr. Knesel co-founded Biomedical Reference Laboratories, Inc. in Burlington, NC, the primary foundation company that today is Laboratory Corporation of America (Lab Corp) - the Largest Lab Business in the World. He served as Senior Vice President of Biomedical Reference Labs as well as its successor, Roche Biomedical Laboratories, Inc., through 1995. During this time, he also founded and was CEO and President of Roche Image Analysis Systems (RIAS), a subsidiary of Hoffmann-La Roche, and successfully established this company as a leader in automated cyto-diagnostics. Mr. Knesel was a primary contributor to technology development at RIAS along with several other outstanding innovators. Mr. Knesel was also the first President of AutoCyte, Inc., the successor to RIAS. Autocyte became TriPath Imaging as a result of mergers that it led, involving two competitors. TriPath was later acquired and is now part of Becton Dickinson (BD). In 2001, Mr. Knesel, his wife Lynn, son Brad and others founded Select Diagnostics, Inc., (a full service diagnostic company with labs in Greensboro and Raleigh, serving North Carolina and Virginia), Mr. Knesel served as its CEO and President until 2011 when Select Diagnostics merged with Solstas (part of Quest Diagnostics). In 2003, Mr. Knesel co-founded Select Laboratory Partners, Inc. (SLP), a leading laboratory management and supply company. In 2007 he and other executives initiated Select Laboratories-South Carolina, LLC. and also established CellSolutions LLC, the newest technology leader and innovator in cytology based diagnostics. In total, Mr. Knesel was the founder or co-founder in over 15 clinical laboratory related businesses.
Before embarking on his prodigious professional career, Mr. Knesel studied at the St. John Vianney Seminary and Armstrong College of Savannah, Georgia. He received a Bachelor of Science in biology and Master of Science in biochemistry from Fairleigh Dickinson University and School of Dentistry in Teaneck, New Jersey. Mr. Knesel is a registered medical technologist and a clinical chemist.
Mr. Knesel has been responsible for several important achievements in his field, including the development of chemical reagents, automated testing systems, an automated serum aliquoting system, automated thin layer cell preparation devices and automated microscopic image analysis systems. He is a member of the American Association of Clinical Chemistry, registered as a Clinical Chemist and is an associate of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. In light of his exceptional undertakings, Mr. Knesel was selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who Among Human Services Professionals, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, and Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
