She went on to achieve a Master of Arts from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University in 1969 and, committed to continued learning, a Doctor of Philosophy from Florida State University in 1988. After starting out as a secondary school teacher for the Department of Public Education in Bunnell, FL, Dr. Henry went on to teach secondary social studies and served as department chair at the Government of the U.S. Virgin Islands in St. Thomas, and she ultimately served as an associate professor of education at Bemidji State University.
A celebrated author, Dr. Henry wrote "The Girl from Jacksonville who Dared to Dream, Hope and Believe!" as well as "Feeling like a Stranger in your Hometown?: Ask the Girl from Jacksonville!" Alongside her primary professional endeavors, Dr. Henry has been a recruiter for African-American students as well as a presenter in her field, and she has notably contributed scholarship money to students at Bemidji State University. Due to her financial contribution to the athletics department at Edward Waters College, a locker room was named in her honor.
Distinguished for her considerable professional aptitude, Dr. Henry was named in Who's Who in Education in 1989 and again in 1992. She also received a Skipping Stone Honor Award in 1997, was recognized by the American Red Cross for her work with disaster relief in 1997, and has been recognized by Who's Who of American Women, as well as the Bryn Mawr College for Women in Higher Education Administration. Dr. Henry maintains memberships with the National Education Association and Phi Delta Kappa.
