Mr. McKenna is a retired aerospace executive who devoted more than 40 years to the field. Most recently serving on the board of directors for Crane Company between 2006 and 2013 in Stamford, CT, the company is best known to the consumer public as a large manufacturer of vending machines. Crane Company also manufactures industrial products in hydrocarbon processing, petrochemical, chemical and power generation, among other products. Mr. McKenna is the former chairman of UTC Aerospace Systems between 2005 and 2006, one of the world's largest suppliers of aerospace and defense products, which is headquartered in Charlotte, NC. He was also employed with Sunstrand, a manufacturer of aerospace and industrial products, for more than 35 years beginning in 1969, most recently serving as the organization's president and chief executive officer. Between 1962 and 1969, he worked in several capacities for Rocketdyne & Bell Aerosystems.
During his three decades with Sundstrand, Mr. McKenna developed the concept and systems that supplied electricity for every commercial aircraft built from the late 1950s and beyond. This led to United Technologies becoming interested and acquiring Sundstrand, which then merged with Hamilton Standards, a company that made air conditioning for airplanes.
In addition to serving on the board of directors for Crane Company, Mr. McKenna also served in the same capacity for Sundstrand Tejin Seike in Japan, Environmental Systems Products Holdings, Inc., Advanced Power Technology, Inc., and Qualitron, Inc. He also spent several years as the director of The Mill, a private school in Rockford, IL.
Mr. McKenna has been active as a longstanding member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and the Aerospace Industries Association. Honored for his work, Mr. McKenna has notably been cited in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Corporate America, Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in the Midwest and Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
First introduced to the field of engineering during the 1950s when the United States was active with the development of missile systems, Mr. McKenna was later inspired to pursue a career in engineering as an undergraduate student. Earning a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from Fairleigh Dickinson University in 1962, he continued his education, receiving a Master of Science in mechanical engineering from the University of Southern California in 1966 and a Master of Business Administration from Northern Illinois University in 1973.
