With more than 50 years of professional experience, Dr. Ott has been an adjunct professor within the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Stanford University since 2006, having been a visiting scholar in statistics with the school from 1996 to 2005. He has also held a number of positions with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from 1966 to 1996, including chief of air toxics and radiation monitoring research staff member from 1984 to 1990, senior research engineer from 1981 to 1984, senior systems analyst from 1973 to 1979, and chief of the laboratory operations branch from 1971 to 1973. Dr. Ott was a Commissioned Officer with the U.S. Public Health Service as a lieutenant in 1966, advancing through the grades to captain until retiring from EPA in 1996 after 30 years of service.

Throughout his career, Dr. Ott has dedicated his time and lent his expertise to a number of achievements. Renowned for the development of the nationally uniform air pollution index, he was the developer of the first total human exposure activity pattern model. In addition, he has conducted research in indoor air pollution, total human exposure to pollutants, statistical models of indoor exposure to particles, motor vehicle exposures, personal air monitoring instruments and measurements of human exposure to tobacco smoke. He has published 130 scientific papers and written 3 scientific books on topics related to environmental science and public health.

Dr. Ott began his career as a student at Claremont McKenna College, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in economics in 1963. He continued his studies with Stanford University, where he completed a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering in 1963, a Master of Science in engineering science in 1965, and a Master of Arts in communications in 1966. Dr. Ott concluded his education in 1972, earning a Doctor of Philosophy in environmental engineering from the university.

A respected voice in the industry, Dr. Ott has been affiliated with a number of organizations in his community. He is a member of the International Society of Indoor Air Quality and Climate, the Air and Waste Management Association, and a co-founder of the International Society of Exposure Science. He has been active with the Sierra Club, the Theater Club, the Jazz Club, and honor societies such as Kappa Mu Epsilon, Tau Beta Pi, Sigma Xi and Phi Beta Kappa.

Throughout his career, Dr. Ott has been recognized for his achievements. He received the Jerome J. Wesolowski International Award "…in recognition of outstanding contributions to the knowledge and practice of human exposure assessment" from the International Society of Exposure Science, the National Statistician Award from the EPA, and the Commendation Medal from the U.S. Public Health Service. He has been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in Finance and Industry, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in the West and Who's Who in the World.
