Dr. Raymond Decker is a Fellow and Honorary Member and 1988 President of ASM International (formerly American Society of Metals) and has contributed to the organization in a number of positions.

Dr. Decker began his career with Inco Ltd. from 1958 to 1982. During this time, he served as vice president of corporate technology at Inco Ltd. from 1978 to 1982. After this appointment, Dr. Decker held the position of vice president of research and corporate relations at the Michigan Technology University from 1982 to 1986.
Dr. Decker was active as president and chief executive officer of University Science Partners, Inc., in Detroit, MI, from 1986 to 1988. In 1988 he co-founded Thixomat, Inc., serving as chair, president and chief executive officer. He has been further associated with Thixomat, Inc., as chief technology officer since 2005. Dr. Decker has created new technology and business as the chief technology officer at Thixomat, Inc. since 2007.
Prior to embarking on his career, Dr. Decker acquired his multi-tasking work habits on the family dairy farm and at the nearby Afton, NY Central School. Then he received a Bachelor of Science from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor in 1952. During this undergrad period, Decker enlisted as a Private in the U.S. Army Reserve in 1950 and completed ROTC training to receive a commission as a Lt in the U.S. Army Ordinance Corp – this resulting in active duty as a Lt in France during the Korean War. Returning to the University of Michigan, he Following earned a Master's Degree in 1955 and Doctor of Philosophy in 1958, both in Metallurgical Engineering (now part of Materials Science and Engineering).
In addition to his career, Dr. Decker worked as an adjunct professor at Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn from 1962 to 1966, New York University in 1965 and the University of Michigan since 1997. He served as Van Horn distinguished lecturer at Case Western Reserve University in 1975 and trustee of the Welding Research Council, Inc., from 1975 to 1980 and Foundry Educational Foundation from 1975 to 1977. In 1980, Dr. Decker was elected to the US National Academy of Engineering. His leading research on Nickel Superalloys was honored at the 2008 Seven Springs Conference.
Dr. Decker contributed as a member of the National Materials Advisory Board in the 1980s and the long-range planning committee of the State Research Fund Panel of Michigan from 1983 to 1986. He became chair of the board of trustees for the Michigan Energy and Research Association and a member of the materials review committee for the National Science Foundation from 1985 to 1986. Following this opportunity, Dr. Decker was a member of the executive committee at the US Strategic Highway Research Program from 1986 to 1993.
During this time, Dr. Decker was appointed to the board of directors of the Lindberg Corporation, now Bodycote Plc., from 1989 to 2001, the Special Metals Corporation from 1990 to 2003, and QuesTek Innovations in 2013. He has been involved with the US Federal Highway Administration as chair of the Research and Technology Coordinating Committee from 1995 to 1997 and the American Society of Metals Materials Education Foundation as chair from 2007 to 2009. Dr. Decker is the author of the treatise "Strengthening Mechanisms in Nickel-Base Superalloys" in 1970 and the lead author of the book "Maraging Steels" in 1988.
Dr. Decker is a Fellow and Honorary Member and 1988 President of ASM International (formerly American Society of Metals) and has contributed to the organization in a number of positions, including chair of the materials system and design division from 1971 to 1973, trustee from 1976 to 1979, chair of the diamond decade committee from 1980 to 1981, Campbell Memorial lecturer in 1985, and chair of the organizing committee for the World Materials Congress in 1988, Engineering Achievement Award in 1977 and Advancement of Research Medal in 2015. He is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers – TMS.
Dr. Decker;s patented inventions include ultra-strength Maraging Steels in 1960, Thixomolding® processing in the 1990s, light weight Magnesium for knee braces in 2014 and bioabsorbable Magnesium body implants in 2018. The latter implants are aimed at fixing bone fractures while obviating the pain, cost and infections at risk in removing today's non-absorbable implants. TMS Light Metals Division presented their 2018 Best Paper Award for his presentation on this biomedical technology.
