Dr. Moats earned a Bachelor of Science from Davidson College in 1969 and began his career as a science teacher at New Trier High School from 1969 to 1973. After receiving a Doctor of Dental Surgery from the Loyola University School of Dentistry in 1977, he went into private practice, where he has been ever since. Dr. Moats was also an assistant clinical professor at the Loyola University School of Dentistry from 1977 to 1978. He was licensed as a dentist by the state of Illinois.
Dr. Moats is a member of the American Dental Association, American Academy of Dental Practice, Chicago Dental Society, Illinois State Dental Society, and the Academy of General Dentistry, among other professional organizations. Outside of his career, Dr. Moats has been on the board of several civic organizations, including the OMNI Youth Service, Buffalo Grove United Way, American Cancer Society of Buffalo Grove, Midwest Epilepsy Center and the Rotary Club, of which he previously served as president.
A Paul Harris fellow, Dr. Moats was also the recipient of the Presidential Citation from Rotary International in 1985, the Academy of General Dentistry Award in 1977, and the SmartPractice Grand Prize Award in the Cosmetic Dentistry Photography Contest in 2002 and 2003.
In his spare time, Dr. Moats is co-breeder and co-owner of show Doberman Pinschers and is involved in American Kennel Club showings. His dogs have won several top honors, including AKC #1 Doberman and #6 Working Dog for 2015, Best of Breed Winner from the Westminster Kennel Club in 2015 and Top 20 Winner from the Doberman Pinscher Club of America in 2014. Dr. Moats is a member of the Doberman Pinscher Club of America, Illinois Doberman Pinscher Club and Blackhawk Kennel Club. In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Moats was selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in the World and Who's Who in the Midwest, as well as the first edition of Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
