As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
With 55 years of research experience, Dr. Leung is a world-renowned pharmacognosist, herbal scientist, author, and consultant who has served in diverse areas of natural products with his vast array of expertise and dedication to the field. In his unique position, he contributes his considerable knowledge to identify botanical raw materials and produce high-quality herbal products using advanced technology. Since 1980, he has founded and subsequently headed several companies, including AYSL Corporation (information & publishing) and Earth Power, Inc. (marketing) in Glen Rock, NJ, and Phyto-Technologies, Inc. (research & manufacturing) and Phyto-True LLC in Woodbine, IA. Between 2001 and 2006, Phyto-Technologies was awarded a Small Business Innovation Research grant from the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine for the characterization and standardization of reproducible feverfew preparations for clinical trials in migraine prevention, with Dr. Leung as the Principal Investigator. This research resulted in the Phyto-True™ System for the identification and quality control of complex traditional herbal medicines for which appropriate methodology was not yet available.
Dr. Leung has worked with myriad distinguished corporations in the implementation of naturally-derived herbal ingredients in some popular health and cosmetic products. These companies include Avon, Estee Lauder, L'Oreal, Bee Alive, Solgar, and Herbalife, among others. Prior to these appointments, he served as the director of research and development for Madis Laboratories, Inc., in Hackensack, NJ, from 1973 to 1977. From 1971 to 1973, he was owner, president, and technical director of Scientific Research Information Services, Inc. (SRIS), his first entrepreneurial endeavor, for consulting in drug information, analysis, and related areas. Two years prior to that, he headed a research team at Bohna Engineering & Research, Inc., in successfully developing a process for single-cell protein production from petroleum ready for pilot plant, funded by Gulf & Western. Both SRIS and Bohna were located in San Francisco, CA. He commenced his illustrious research career as a postgraduate research chemist at the University of California San Francisco Medical Center from 1967 to 1969 where he worked on the biosynthesis of opium alkaloids. And between 1963 and 1967 he was a Lilly Foundation fellow at the University of Michigan conducting graduate research in the culture of Psilocybe baeocystis for the production of psilocybin and related hallucinogens, including the isolation and identification of two new ones that he named baeocystin and norbaeocystin.
To prepare for his career, Dr. Leung pursued formal education at National Taiwan University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy in 1961. He then went to the University of Michigan for his graduate studies in Pharmacognosy on a teaching assistantship from 1962 to 1967, majoring in microbiology and chemistry of hallucinogens, receiving a Master of Science in Pharmacognosy in 1965 and a Doctor of Philosophy in Pharmacognosy in 1967.
Affiliated with the American Chemical Society, the American Society of Pharmacognosy, and the New York Academy of Sciences, Dr. Leung has also been a prolific author, having penned several books and dozens of articles to scholarly journals since 1965. Most recently, he debuted "The Life of a Pharmacognosist: a Jack of All Trades" and "Are Drugs Better Than Herbs?" as a two-book set, titled "My Life & Rollercoaster Career" in 2018, highlighting his versatile background, upbringing and education while also discussing his extensive research on herbal supplements and its subsequent impact upon an individual's health. These books can be purchased on www.amazon.com. In light of his outstanding undertakings, he was also recently granted a patent by the European Patent Office for the key part of his Phyto-True System, its Representative Botanical Reference Materials (RBRM), without which research and production of genuine traditional herbal medicine would not yield meaningful results.
As a testament to his profound success, Dr. Leung has accrued numerous accolades, including the Alumni Distinguished Lifetime Achievement Award from the College of Pharmacy at the University of Michigan in 2011, which recognized his contribution to the scientific advancement of traditional herbal medicine. He has also frequently been an invited speaker at various conferences and seminars both nationally and abroad in such countries such as China, Singapore and Canada. For years, he was the co-chair of the Chinese Herbal Products Committee with the American Herbal Products Association as well as a member of the Cosmetic, Toiletry, and Fragrance Association's International Nomenclature Committee (CTFA-INC) and Chair of its Subcommittee of Botanical Nomenclature.
