Prior to this appointment, he held the position of research scientist for the University of California, San Diego, from 1971 to 2007 and director of the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry from 1996 to 2005. Dr. Lugmair began his career as a science assistant for the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry from 1965 to 1968.
Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Lugmair pursued an education at the University of Vienna in 1965, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy in physics. Beyond his responsibilities within the field, he has contributed many chapters to books and articles to such esteemed journals as the Astrophysical Journal, Science, Nature, Earth and Planetary Science Letters, Meteoritics and Planetary Science, and the Geophysical Research Letters, among others. In addition to his primary trade, Dr. Lugmair remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise, such as Academia Europaea.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Lugmair has accrued several accolades throughout his impressive career. He was presented with the V.M. Goldschmidt Medal from the Geochemical Society in 2007, the Leonard Medal from the Meteoritical Society in 2000, the George P. Merrill Award from the National Academy of Science in 1987, and the Planetary Material Curation Team Group Award from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration in 1983. He was also honored as a Distinguished Research Scientist by the University of California, San Diego, in 2005. Likewise, he was recognized as a fellow of the American Geophysical Union in 2000, a fellow of the Geochemical Society, a fellow of the Meteoritical Society and an honorary fellow of the European Geosciences Union. Dr. Lugmair was selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in America and Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
Dr. Lugmair married Rosa Maria in 1965. They have two grown children, Claus and Claudia.
