A retired academic administrator, in 2008 Dr. Cronholm-Neff concluded her seven year career as senior vice president and chief operating officer of the City College of New York and her 40 year career in academia. Her professional academic career began with a faculty position in Biology at the University of Louisville; she also completed the first year's courses of the University's School of Law. In 1978 she was named Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Louisville, and was later honored by election to the College's Hall of Honor. In 1985 she became Dean of Arts and Sciences and Professor of Biology at Temple University in Philadelphia. In 1992 she assumed the position of Provost of CUNY's Baruch College, and Interim President of Baruch from 1998 to 1999. For the following two years she was the founding Executive Director of the Center for Jewish History in New York City. In 2001 the Chancellor of CUNY requested that she return as Sr. Vice President of the City College of New York, from which she retired in 2008. Following her retirement she was active as a consultant, including a strategic consultancy for three northern Manhattan hospitals of the New York Health and Hospital Corporation, Development advisor for the Educational Housing Service, and consultant to three CUNY Presidents.
Dr. Cronholm-Neff was recognized as the first female administrator within every college and university with which she was employed and her career was noted for mentoring females and minorities, in addition to her role as mentor for aspiring administrators for the American Council of Education. A member of the Board of Directors for the Journal of the History of Ideas, she served on numerous panels and boards related to international education, affirmative action initiatives of the U.S. Government, the education of inner city students, and related fields.
As President of the national Council of Colleges of Arts and Sciences Dr. Cronholm-Neff was a contributor to the National Association of Land Grant and Urban Universities, Chaired the Committee on International Education, and she partnered with the American Association of University Professors in creating their policy on the Ethics of Faculty Recruitment. She led workshops for the Middle States Association for Colleges and Schools on college strategic planning, and was appointed by the Association as Chair of a Commission on Evaluation, to formulate policies on the evaluation of all institutions of higher education in New York State. She incorporated the Harlem 50 Program into the City College of New York with civil rights icon Rev. Eugene Cullender and Congressman Charles Rangel to promote college-readiness in Harlem middle school students. She has provided lectures on the Civil Rights movement to middle and high school students in Philadelphia. She served as the President of the Hampden Boothe Library of the National Arts Club in New York City; was Chair of its Committee on Architecture, and co-director of the Gramercy Park Association to promote cultural programs to inner city students.
Since retirement Dr. Cronholm-Neff has been devoted to pro bono management consultancy for non-profit organizations. Her work included strategic adviser to the national Dining for Women Program, consultant and seminar speaker for the FOCUS program of female physicians of the University of Pennsylvania, and Board Member of a local Main Line organization devoted to community programs. Currently she is Treasurer of her local League of Women Voters, an associate member of the University of Pennsylvania's Presbyterian Hospital Ethics Committee, a member of the Board of Directors of the Share Food Program, which provides over a half million food packages a month to low income residents of four states, Editor of the UPenn Ortner Center Violence and Abuse in Relationships Newsletter, and Advisory Board member for the Wagner Free Institute of Natural Sciences. In 2018 she was a presenter at the national convention of the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts on the coordination of social activism and organizations working toward community conciliation.
Dr. Cronholm-Neff has been presented with awards for her academic work and her contributions as an administrator. She received the Excellence in Administration award from the University of Louisville; the Undergraduate Student Government of the City College of New York created for her a Special Award for Outstanding Service to Students; she was presented with the New York City Woman of the Year and an award for service to Women of Color in New York; she received awards for outstanding services by departments reporting to her. She was the recipient of the American Jurisprudence Awards in Torts, Contracts, Civil Procedure, and Property for her Law School work. She is listed in E.R. Squibb and Sons Research and Development Bibliography for contributions to the study of Cyclic AMP, 1957-1969. Dr. Cronholm-Neff has been featured in over 25 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who of American Women, and Who's Who in Science and Technology.
Dr. Cronholm-Neff earned a Bachelor of Arts, summa cum laude, in 1962 at the University of Louisville and obtained a doctorate at the same academic institute in 1967. She was awarded a three year pre-doctoral fellowship by the National Institutes of Health, followed by an NIH three year post-doctoral fellowship, both completed in the Immunology division of the Department of Microbiology.
