With more than 40 years of professional experience, Dr. Smith has taught in the Graduate School of the University of Utah College of Health Sciences since 2017, having formerly served as Assistant, then Associate Professor of Medicine (Clinical) from 1975 to 2017. With specialties in internal medicine, behavioral medicine and chronic pain, he is been a pioneer in Mind-Body Medicine in the Intermountain West. At the University of Utah, he created the Stress Medicine Clinic, which explored how to effectively treat the interaction between mental and physical health. He later created the Center for MindBody Health, and was Director of Stress Medicine at the Omega Pain Clinic and HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital. He co-authored five editions of the textbook Mind Body Health: The Effect of Attitudes, Emotions, and Relationships. He has lectured in nearly every state in the U.S., in Canada and Poland. He received the Medical Students Association teaching award from the University of Utah.
In the 1980's he served as Vice Chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine at LDS Hospital, where he was also Medical Director of The Behavioral and Stress Medicine Task Force, chair of the Primary Care Project and chair of The General Internal Medicine Task Force. He served then as president of Collegium Aesculapium.
Earlier in his career, Dr. Smith was chair of the Utah State Unproven Health Practices Committee, Chairman of Professional Education for the American Cancer Society and a physician associate at Memorial Medical Center from 1974 to 1989. He is a veteran of the US Army Medical Corps, having served in Korea and Washington DC 1970 –1972. He has conducted many research studies, including, currently since 2011, with PRA Health Sciences.
Dr. Smith obtained a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Utah in 1964. He then attended the University of California, San Francisco, earning an additional Bachelor of Science in 1965 and Doctor of Medicine degree in 1968. He did his internship and medical residency at the University of Utah Medical Center from 1968 to 1974, where he was Chief Medical Resident at the Salt Lake V.A. Hospital. Dr. Smith is a diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine.
A respected leader in his field, Dr. Smith has been a member of the American College of Physicians, the Society of General Internal Medicine, the American Psychosomatic Society, the Society of Behavioral Medicine, American Academy of Sleep Medicine and (for 15 years) on the Board of Directors of the Organization for Fibromyalgia and Fatigue Education and Research. He has been featured in numerous publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in the West, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
