With decades of experience to his credit, Dr. Zarefsky has served as an assistant professor, associate professor, professor, chairman, associate dean of the school of speech and dean at Northwestern University, where he currently is a professor emeritus. He pursued an education at Northwestern, earning a Bachelor of Science in 1968, a Master of Arts in 1969 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1974. He began teaching as an instructor in 1968 and was promoted to assistant professor in 1974, associate professor in 1977, and professor in 1982.
Initially interested in the study of public arguments because of his history of participation in debate competitions, Dr. Zarefsky has shared his expertise in communication through numerous written works. Along with publications such as "Contemporary Debate", which he co-authored in 1983, and "Public Speaking Strategies for Success," he has edited and co-edited such books as "Fundamentals of Argumentation Theory," "Rhetorical Perspectives on Argumentation" and "Political Argumentation in the United States". He has also penned multiple articles for numerous journals as well as several historical books, including "President Johnson's War on Poverty," for which he received the Winans-Wichelns Award in 1986, and "Lincoln, Douglas, and Slavery," for which he received the same award in 1990. He is one of only four individuals who have received this prestigious award twice.
Celebrated for his variety of experience and contributions to his field, Dr. Zarefsky accepted the Best Article Award from the Southern Speech Communication Association in 1985 and 1998 as well as the Midwest Forensic Association in 1988. He was also recognized as the Debate Coach of the Year by Georgetown University in 1973 and Emory University in 1972. To remain aware of professional developments, Dr. Zarefsky maintains memberships with such organizations as the American Association of University Professors, the National Communication Association, the Rhetoric Society of America, and the American Forensic Association, having served many times in administrative positions.
