With 40 years of professional experience, Dr. Richmond has been recognized as professor emeritus of Holy Names University since 1997. Prior to her retirement, she held the position of a professor of English from 1968 to 1997, having been an associate professor from 1966 to 1968, an assistant professor from 1960 to 1966, and an instructor from 1958 to 1960. In addition to her primary roles she served Holy Names University as director of the English Master's program from 1987 to 1996, dean of academic affairs from 1980 to 1986, and as chair of English, speech, and drama from 1970 to 1975 and again in 1979. Earlier in her career, Dr. Richmond worked as an English instructor at Louisiana State University from 1957 to 1958.

Dr. Richmond began her career as a student at Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts, magna cum laude, in 1951. She continued her studies at Louisiana State University, obtaining a Master of Arts in 1952. She then enrolled at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. From 1955 to 1957 she studied at Oxford University and received a B. Litt. degree. She completed her Ph.D at the University of North Carolina in 1959.

A respected voice in her community, Dr. Richmond has been active in scholarly organizations in relation to her areas of expertise. She has been a member of Modern Language Association, Early English Text Society, International Arthurian Society, New Chaucer Society, Medieval Academy of America, International Shakespeare Association, and the Conference on Christianity and Literature. Dr. Richmond has published numerous articles in professional journals and books: Laments for the Dead in Medieval Narrative (1966); The Popularity of Middle English Romance (1975), Muriel Spark (1984); Geoffrey Chaucer (1992); The Legend of Guy of Warwick (1996); Shakespeare, Catholicism, and Romance (2000); Chaucer as Children's Literature (2004); Shakespeare as Children's Literature (2008); Chivalric Stories as Children's Literature (2014); The Faerie Queene as Children's Literature (2016); Don Quixote as Children's Literature (2018). She received the Conference on Christianity and Literature's Book Award in 2000, and CHOICE Outstanding Academic Text in 2008. Dr. Richmond wrote, produced, and narrated the documentary A Prologue to Chaucer (1985), funded by National Endowment for the Humanities and distributed by Films for the Humanities.

Throughout her career Dr. Richmond has been celebrated for her accomplishments. She received many scholarships, including a Fulbright at Oxford. She received a research grant from the American Council of Learned Societies, and was program director for a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities for the Core Program at Holy Names. In 2008 she became a member of the College of Fellows of the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology and was made Doctor of Humane Letters. Dr. Richmond has been featured in numerous publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in America and Who's Who of American Women.
