Dr. Hamilton is an endocrinologist and educator of nearly 50 years. Since 2001, he has been the Special Assistant to the President and Professor of Internal Medicine at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston in the John P. and Kathrine G. McGovern Medical School. He previously was a Clinical Professor of Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.
Born and raised in Houston, there have been five generations of physicians in his family including his son who is a physician and Interventional Radiologist. He has been married to Carolyn Burton since 1961 and they have one son and one daughter. Noting the importance of family, Dr. Hamilton's wife has played a critical role in his success and his family is the most important aspect of his life.
Dr. Hamilton received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Texas in Austin in 1961 and a Master of Science and Doctor of Medicine, with honors, from Baylor College of Medicine in 1966. He was an Intern, Assistant Resident and Chief Resident in Medicine at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore between 1966 and 1971. He was a Clinical and Research Fellow at Harvard University Medical School/Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, MA, between 1969 and 1970. He was an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and an Attending Physician at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1971-72. He was a staff endocrinologist and director of the Endocrine Research Laboratory at the Wilford Hall U.S. Air Force Medical Center in San Antonio, TX, while serving as a Lieutenant Colonel between 1972 and 1974.
Affiliated as a staff member at Memorial Hermann Hospital and St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital, Dr. Hamilton has also been an attending physician in endocrinology at the Ben Taub General Hospital/Baylor College of Medicine since 1974 and an attending physician and staff member at The Houston Methodist Hospital (1974-2000).
Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism. Dr. Hamilton was in private practice of internal medicine and endocrinology at the Medical Clinic of Houston between 1974 and 2000. He joined UT Physicians, the clinical component of UTHealth in 2000 when he became a faculty member of the University of Texas.
Between 2003 and 2007, Dr. Hamilton served as a member of the Practicing Physicians Advisory Council for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and was a member of the Health, Science and Research Committee of the World Anti-Doping Agency in Montreal, Canada. He was a medical advisor for the employee benefit committee in Southwestern Bell Telephone Company between 1975 and 1993.
Dr. Hamilton is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians which honored him with the Laureate Award in 2003 and named him Advocate of the Year in 2006. He has served medical organizations in numerous capacities including President of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, the American College of Endocrinology, the Houston Academy of Medicine and Harris County Medical Society. He was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha and Sigma X Honor Societies and is a Master of the American College of Endocrinology.
Dr. Hamilton has been involved in various capacities with the Boy Scouts of America since 1980, including a District and Council chair, Area president, Regional Board of Directors, and the National Council Executive Board and Advisory Committee. He has received awards from the Boy Scouts of America, including the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award, Silver Beaver, Silver Antelope and Silver Buffalo Awards. Furthermore, Dr. Hamilton has been President of the Paul Carrington Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution and the Kiwanis Club of Houston. He is on the Board of Directors of the Texas State Historical Association. He has served on the board of Regents of the Texas Women's University and as a Chair of the Board of Directors for the Museum of Health and Medical Science in Houston and the Texas Medical Center Library. Dr. Hamilton has also been showcased in approximately 40 editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, and Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
Dr. Hamilton has contributed multiple articles to scholarly journals during his tenure in medicine. He is also a non-medical writer who published his first book in 2015, "A Rose Blooms in Texas," as well as a children's book in 2016, "Wrangler George and Buzz." His next publication will be "Reflections On the Circumstances of 17th Century European Americans." He is on the committee producing the Handbook of Texas Medicine for the Texas State Historical Association.
