A native of the United States, Mr. Leonard has excelled as full-professor of international culture and language at Fukuoka University of Education in Munakata-shi, Japan since 2010. Previously holding the post of associate professor of English at Hirosaki Gakuin University in Hirosaki-shi, Japan from 1992 to 2000, he also worked as an assistant language teacher for the Japan Exchange and Teaching Program in Hirosaki-shi from 1989 to 1992 where he was elected as a Prefectural Representative and then as a Block Representative for the Tohoku-Hokkaido area by the Association for Japan Exchange and Teaching (AJET). Prior to relocating to Japan, Mr. Leonard served as a course coordinator in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature for the Spanish Section at Purdue University between 1988 and 1989.
During his career, Mr. Leonard found success as a trustee for the Aomori Foundation for International Relations in Japan. He also held the positions of a visiting professor at La Universidad de las Americas in Costa Rica, a visiting lecturer at Purdue University, and a visiting scholar at both the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and Ball State University in Indiana. Moreover, Mr. Leonard has contributed on the board of directors for the Southwest Commission of Religious Studies (SWCRS) since 2006.
Mr. Leonard has written extensively in academic journals, magazines, and newspapers over the years. He had a weekly, then monthly, column in the Shelbyville News (Indiana) about Japan for a number of years. Mr. Leonard embarked upon a career as an author, writing English as a Second Language (ESL) textbooks, beginning in 1992. Since that time, Mr. Leonard has authored over 20 books, as well as handbooks and chapters to books by other authors, and hundreds of articles in a variety of publications and other print media. Writing on various topics, including cross-cultural differences, religion, spirituality, and languages, his first book, "Crossing Cultures: America and Japan," was published in 1992. He also produced a CD entitled "Wheels of Light: An Introduction to the Chakra System with Guided Meditations."
A member of multiple professional organizations, Mr. Leonard remains active with the Indiana Landmarks Historical Society, Shelby County Historical Society, Japan Association for Language Teachers (where he is an editor for "The Language Teacher"), and the Friends of Camp Chesterfield Foundation (FCCF) (where he serves on the board as a trustee), and the Japan Writers Conference and the Indiana Association of Historians, among others. He has found success as the executive secretary for the Association of the Scientific Study of Religion (ASSR) since 2006 and as the Camp Historian and Archivist for the Indiana Association of Spiritualists (IAOS) since 2009. He also serves on the "Education Committee" for the IAOS. Additionally, Mr. Leonard is a lifetime member of the Shelbyville High School Alumni Association and the Purdue University Alumni Association.
Mr. Leonard accepted a Frank P. Forward Award for research from the Association of the Scientific Study of Religion in 2010 and 2012, as well as a Youth for Understanding Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013. He was also honored with a Teaching Award while working as a teaching assistant in graduate school from the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures at Purdue University. Likewise, Mr. Leonard has been selected for inclusion in more than 15 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Asia, and Who's Who in the World.
Mr. Leonard initially pursued an education at Purdue University, earning both an undergraduate degree with honors and distinction in 1985 and a Master's degree in 1987. He completed a doctoral program in 2004 by distance education that focused on American religions, specifically Modern Spiritualism. He also earned a diploma in teaching English as a foreign language in 1993. He has been ordained by sanction through the Indiana Association of Spiritualists since 2006 and as a minister in Spiritualism since 2003. Mr. Leonard also holds certifications in Missionary in Spiritualism, Cleric in Spiritualism, and Diaconate in Spiritualism through the Universal Spiritualist Association since 2001.
