Prior to his appointment to his current role, he was bishop of the Eparchy of Passaic, NJ, from 2007 to 2012 and bishop of the Eparchy of Phoenix, AZ, from 2002 to 2007, having been ordained as a bishop in 2002. He had been an ordained priest with Holy Dormition Monastery in 1987 and was a professed member of the Franciscan Order in 1985.
Archbishop Skurla began his career as a student at Columbia University, obtaining Bachelor of Arts in philosophy in 1981. He subsequently entered Mary Immaculate Seminary, completing a Master of Divinity in 1986. He concluded his studies with the seminary in 1987, earning a Master of Theology. He was a member of the 2012, 2015 and 2018 Synods of Bishops and the Congregation of Oriental Churches of Rome.
Throughout his lifetime, Archbishop Skurla has been recognized for his achievements and contributions. He has been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the East.
