Dr. Kern recently retired from full-time university administration as the graduate dean at Herzing University in Menomonee Falls, WI where he oversaw the graduate business programs and the graduate programs in nursing education, nursing administration as well as the family nurse practitioner programs. Bringing with him more than 35 years of relevant expertise in both education and administration, he most recently served as the chief academic officer at Concorde Career Colleges from 2013 to 2014 and dean of academic affairs at Nova Southeastern University's Abraham S. Fischler School of Education from 2009 to 2013. From 2005 to 2009 he served as dean of the graduate school at Kaplan University, which has since been acquired by Purdue University. In addition, Dr. Kern served as dean of technical studies and curriculum and dean of academic services at Odessa College, chair of Computer Information Systems at Collin College, Vice President of Instruction at Western Oklahoma State College and Texas Tech University's Coordinator and Liaison of the Academy 2000 centers in Galveston, Houston and Dallas.
Prior to entering education, Dr. Kern was a deputy health officer and the director of the Austin/Travis County Vector Control Center and deputy health officer in Denton County, Texas. In that role, he would often go out into the community and teach. Able to make a direct impact on those who owned large corporations and small businesses, he reevaluated his professional goals. After the birth of his daughter, Dr. Kern transitioned into education full-time.
As an entrepreneur, Dr. Kern has always been active in private business and industry as well. The former principal and owner of Xstream Computers between 2002 and 2009, Dr. Kern became the chief executive officer of RAN Global, Inc in 2014. Since leaving full-time educational administration, Dr. Kern is now the senior research biologist, consultant and a director of Joy Industries, LLC in Oklahoma, a medical products manufacturing and production company.
Dr. Kern is a life member of the Texas Association of Instructional Administrators, the Texas Association of College Technical Educators, and the Texas Technical Society. His memberships have included the American Indian Science and Engineering Society, the Odessa Optimist Club, where he served on the board of directors and life membership in Phi Kappa Phi and Phi Delta Kappa, honorary education associations. In 2014 Dr. Kern founded Child Street Ministries, a global relief organization that built a 3,000 square foot facility and has donated almost half a million dollars to supporting children, young adults and families in Cavite Province in the Philippine Islands.
Public education has also been part of Dr. Kern's career. He served as curriculum director at the Maypearl Independent School District and taught AP Computer Science at Highland Park High School in Dallas. Named by First Chair of America as the Distinguished Bandmaster of America for the State of Arizona in 1981 for his work at the Parker Unified School District; Dr. Kern was also named a state finalist for Educator of the Year by the Texas Computer Education Association in 1987; and Distinguished Professor in the Business and Industry Division by Collin College in 1989.
He also served as field reader for new Texas higher education technology programs and notably chaired the standing committee on university transfer and dispute resolutions for the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. He has been included in more than 30 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Finance and Business, Who's Who in South and Southwest, and Who's Who in the World.
Dr. Kern obtained a Bachelor of Science at the University of Central Oklahoma in 1970, Master of Arts at the University of Texas at San Antonio in 1977, and Doctor of Philosophy at the University of North Texas in 1990. He is a certified Wideband Gigabit Network Engineer and holds several other industry certifications.
