John Anthony Poirier, Ph.D., Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. Poirier has been endorsed by Marquis Who's Who as a leader in the fields of physics and higher education

NOTRE DAME, IN, January 03, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present John Anthony Poirier, Ph.D., with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Poirier celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Poirier has been a professor emeritus of astrophysics and elementary particle physics at the University of Notre Dame since 2008. First hired in 1964 as an associate professor of physics and later becoming a full professor in 1969, he is renowned for his work in astrophysics and cosmic rays, as well as experimental research in high energy elementary particle physics.

Prior to his tenure at the University of Notre Dame, Dr. Poirier was a National Science Foundation fellow in Geneva between 1963 and 1964, staff physicist at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory between 1959 and 1963, and lecturer at the University of California, Berkeley, from 1959 to 1963. He also served as a program associate for the National Science Foundation from 1977 to 1978.

During his career, Dr. Poirier spent five weeks in Russia conducting a collaborative experiment on pion electron scattering with several Russian experts in the field. Located at the Serpukhov High Energy Accelerator, which at the time was the highest energy accelerator in the world, it was the first international collaboration between Russia and the United States. Requiring approval by the U.S. Department of State, the experiment first measured the radius of the pi-minus meson utilizing a 50 GeV negative pion beam at Serpukhov and later with a 100 GeV pion beam at the newly constructed higher energy accelerator at Fermilab.

Dr. Poirier is a longstanding member of the American Astronomical Society and the American Physical Society. He has contributed more than 160 articles to peer-reviewed articles, has been invited to multiple addresses, conferences and workshops both nationally and internationally, and hosted the 1996 Keynote Address at the annual joint meeting of the Northern Indiana Astronomical Group at the Astronomy Convention and the Great Lakes Region Astronomical League Annual Meeting in North Webster, IN. He has been cited in the 20th and 23rd editions of Who's Who in the Midwest for his contributions.

Entering college, Dr. Poirier was unsure as to what field he wanted to pursue. Considering engineering, mathematics and physics, he realized that the class hours required for engineering would be quite consuming and so he began a double major in mathematics and physics. He subsequently narrowed it down to physics, earning a Bachelor of Science from the University of Notre Dame in 1954, followed by a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy from Stanford University in 1959 and 1956, respectively. Notably, Dr. Poirier's doctoral thesis, "Positron Electron Scattering at 200 MeV," was an elastic scattering experiment suggested by Burton Richter. It was the first such experiment conducted at Stanford University's Hansen Experimental Physics Laboratory prior to the construction of the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. The results agreed with Bhabha's theory and showed the necessity of the annihilation term among the Feynman graphs.

Married to Jule Griffin, Dr. Poirier has a family of five. In retirement, he loves to go dancing.
In recognition of outstanding contributions to his profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, John Anthony Poirier, Ph.D., has been featured on the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement website. Please visit www.ltachievers.com for more information about this honor.
