Richard Michalik considers the highlight of his career to be the month he spent teaching at various hospitals in China.

Dr. Michalik began his career as an intern and resident in general surgery at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN, from 1974 to 1978. From 1980 to 1982, he served as a resident in cardiac surgery at Emory School of Medicine at Emory University in Atlanta, GA. He continued his career at Emory School of Medicine as an associate surgeon from 1982 to 1985. Following this appointment, he served as a surgeon for cardiac and thoracic surgery with the East Tennessee Cardiovascular Surgery Group from 1985 to 2004. From 1985 to 2018, Dr. Michalik worked as a clinical associate professor of surgery at Quillen College of Medicine at East Tennessee State University.
Prior to embarking on his career, Dr. Michalik received a Bachelor of Arts from Northwestern University in Evanston, IL, in 1969. In 1974, he concluded his education with a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Michalik is a diplomate of the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.
In addition to his career, Dr. Michalik has been the medical director for the pre-hospital board for the City of Church Hill. He has served with the United States Public Health Service from 1978 to 1980, and in 1993, he was also a board member of the city of Church Hill Community Chest. He is a member of the American College of Cardiology, the North American Society of Pacing and Electrophysiology, and the Society of Thoracic Surgeons. He has been named a fellow of the American College of Cardiology and is also a contributor of articles to professional journals. Dr. Michalik has previously been selected for inclusion in the fourth edition of Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America, the 22nd edition of Who's Who in the South and Southwest, and multiple editions of Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
Dr. Michalik first became involved with the medical field as a child by frequenting his mother's workplace as administrator of the University of Pittsburgh Medical School's pathology department in the era of Jonas Salk's polio vaccine work. Dr. Michalik considers the highlight of his career to be the month he spent teaching at various hospitals in China.
