Prof. Valerie L. Schneider, PhD Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Schneider, PhD with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. Hailing from a family of teachers, Prof. Schneider has worked as a professor of speech at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, Tennessee for 26 years. She taught in the department of communication, which included her primary field of speech, but also advertising, journalism, and public relations. She also did some teaching of the introductory public relations course and developed some speech courses. There, she also coached debate and forensics for two years. As a woman who entered the industry with a Doctor of Philosophy, she has been a pioneer of women in academia.

She began her career as a teacher of English and history and the director of forensics and drama at Montello High School in 1963. Later, she served as a speech instructor at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida in 1966, moving up the ranks to the role of assistant professor of speech before transferring to Edinboro State College in Pennsylvania. She then excelled as an associate professor of speech at East Tennessee State University for five years. During this time, she has also worked with numerous newspaper publications including USA Today, the Jonesboro Herald and Tribune, the Mountain City Tomahawk, the Erwin Record, the Elizabethton Star, and the Johnson City Press Chronicle.

In 1963, Prof. Schneider earned a Bachelor of Arts in English and history with a minor in secondary education from Carroll College in Waukesha, WI. She then graduated with a Master of Arts in speech communications from the University of Wisconsin three years later, and obtained a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Florida in speech communications in 1969. She concluded her studies with a Certificate of Advanced Study in developmental education from Appalachian State University in 1981.

Prof Schneider has served as the president of the Tennessee Speech Communication Association (the first woman to do so), and also as president of the Tennessee Basic Skills Council. She also served for several years as Tennessee representative to the Speech Communication Association's States Advisory Council. She was also East Tennessee State University's Corporate representative to the American Association of University Women for several years. She has served as an adult Bible teacher for 20 years at First Presbyterian Church in Johnson City, TN and for 10 years at Zion Covenant Church in Sheboygan, WI. She was made an honorary life member of Presbyterian Women for her work in the local church in TN. She has also embarked on a self-funded mission trip every year since 1997.

Prof. Schneider has published a total of 26 articles and over 70 book reviews in professional journals. She has won a total of nine awards for her writings, which include academic, journalistic, and advertising materials. One of the biggest highlights of her career was being published in the Quarterly Journal of Speech, a top journal in her field, for which she also received an award.

She accepted a Creative Writing Award from the Virginia Highlands Arts Festival in 1973, as well as awards from the Tri-Cities Metropolitan Advertising Federation and the Kingsport Times News in the mid-1980s. Notably, she was a finalist of the Money Magazine Contest in 1994 to determine the best personal finance managers in America, and the Writer's Digest Contest in 2000. She was additionally featured in the first edition of Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America and several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the Midwest, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, and Who's Who of American Women.
