In an effort to merge his interests of psychology and serving his country, Dr. Sellman has served in a number of ranks and positions in the U.S. Air Force as well as contributed his professional skills to various government and educational institutions. He started out as a commissioned second lieutenant in 1963, advancing through the grades to major 11 years later. During this time, he was an operational psychologist with the 3320th Retraining Group at Amarillo Air Force Base, chief of the test review section of the Air Force Human Resources Laboratory at Lackland Air Force Base, research psychologist at Lowry Air Force Base, and an exchange officer with the Royal Australian Air Force in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. After becoming a major, he became chief of Air Force Personnel Testing, Headquarters U.S. Air Force at the Pentagon in Washington, DC, for four years before separating from service in 1980.
Consequent to his military service, he also lectured at a number of universities, including St. Mary's University, Our Lady of the Lake College (now known as Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady University), Texas Lutheran University, and the University of Colorado at Denver. After leaving the U.S. Air Force, Dr. Sellman began a position as a staff officer in enlistment testing and entrance standards at the U.S. Department of Defense in Washington, DC, from 1980 until 1984, when he was appointed to the department's position as Director for Accession Policy. He served as a civilian of the department until 2002 when he became vice president for strategic planning for the Human Resources Research Organization in Alexandria, VA, remaining in this position for 13 years.
Dr. Sellman earned a Bachelor of Arts in psychology and history from Texas A&M University in 1962, where he would earn a Master of Education in counseling psychology the following year. He then obtained a Doctor of Philosophy in industrial and organizational psychology from Purdue University in 1968 and a diploma in national and international security from Harvard University in 1986. Alongside his professional roles, Dr. Sellman went on to serve as president of the Division of Military Psychology of the American Psychological Association and has been awarded a Presidential Meritorious Executive Award, a U.S. Selective Service System Achievement Award, and several civilian distinguished service awards from the U.S. Department of Defense. He is listed in several editions of Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
