Dr. Mary M. Gill is a professor of communication studies at Buena Vista University.

Dr. Gill is a professor of communication studies at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa, who has been teaching on campus since 1991. Two years ago, in 2016, she also took on the challenge of serving as the program director for the Master of Arts in organizational leadership program. During her tenure, she has notably served as the interim vice president for student affairs, associate dean of the faculty and dean of the school of communications and arts. Prior to accepting her first position at Buena Vista University, she was a graduate teaching assistant at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, director of forensics at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks and data control technician and graduate teaching assistant at South Dakota State University in Brookings. Dr. Gill has been in academia since 1979.
Interested in the areas of self-identity, autoethnography as methodology and forgiveness, Dr. Gill has published extensively on classroom communication, language and sexual harassment since 1986 and has also served on the editorial board of the Iowa Journal of Communication. Holding a position on the planning council of The Way Up since 1995, she has held various leadership roles with the Iowa Communication Association, including president and executive secretary as well. Furthermore, Dr. Gill is a longtime member of the American Forensic Association, the National Communication Association and the International Association for Relationship Research, among other professional organizations.
Honored with The Way Up Conference Recognition Award in 2014, Dr. Gill also received an Iowa Communication Association Citation Award in 2009. Additionally, she was presented with an Iowa Journal of Communication Award in 2001 and a Buena Vista University Faculty Member of the Year Award in 1996. In light of all her accomplishments, Dr. Gill has been included in several editions of Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who of American Women and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
Interested in communications since grade school, Dr. Gill spent her time in high school as a debater and event speaker. A first-generation high school graduate, going to college was an amazing feat for her and her family. Pursuing an education at South Dakota State University, she received a Bachelor of Arts in 1979 and a Master of Arts in 1982. Dr. Gill concluded her education with a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1991.
