A highly esteemed scientist and educator with more than 50 years of experience, John Gordon Eoll, PhD, began his career as an assistant professor of physics at Lenoir-Rhyne College, now Lenoir-Rhyne University, from 1974 to 1976. He then worked as a staff member for the Los Alamos National Laboratory from 1976 to 1980 before returning to Lenoir-Rhyne College as a full professor and acting chairman of the department of physics from 1980 to 1984. Upon leaving this position, Dr. Eoll joined Science and Engineering Associates Inc. (S.E.A.) in Salem, Massachusetts, as a senior scientist from 1984 until 1990.
Throughout the next decade, Dr. Eoll pursued a variety of private government contracts, including multiple trips to Mexico City, with good friend, Juan Huerta, where they worked on environmental problems of air pollution. In the late 1990s, he received a request to work with Digital on the technological problem of Y2K. He had a lot of experience with Fortran at Indiana University, which helped solve the problem. After this, he continued to work for Digital, which soon became Compaq, and then finally, Hewlett-Packard. His final job, prior to retiring, was with ENSCO in Melbourne, Florida, where he worked on aerospace, avionics, and national security, to deliver engineering, science, and advanced technological solutions.
Before embarking on his career, Dr. Eoll obtained a Bachelor of Science in physics from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, in 1964. After this accomplishment, he went on to Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island. He then began Nuclear Power Training under the program of Adm. Rickover, followed by training on a prototype in West Milton, near Saratoga Springs, New York. The prototype was the nuclear reactor on the Bainbridge, which turned out to be his first assignment.
Dr. Eoll served on active duty with the U.S. Navy in Vietnam from 1966 to 1970. There, he excelled as engineering officer of the watch on the USS Bainbridge DLGN-25, the first nuclear-powered destroyer, which escorted the Enterprise in the Vietnam War. Following his service, he attended Indiana University and earned a Master of Arts in astronomy in 1971 and a Doctor of Philosophy in astrophysics in 1974. In addition, he was a trainee at the National Science Foundation in 1963.
Outside of his primary endeavors, Dr. Eoll accepted fellowships from several educational institutions such as Indiana University, the United States Air Force Southeastern Center for Electrical Engineering Education, and the American Society for Engineering Education. He was a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the Federation of American Scientists, the Association for Computing Machinery, and the American Astronomical Society.
Dr. Eoll served in the U.S. Navy Reserve from 1964 to 1983, retiring as a commander. He has also been a consultant to the Naval Surface Warfare Center and the Air Force Weapons Laboratory. He regularly contributed numerous articles to professional journals. In light of his exceptional undertakings, he was selected for inclusion in the 21st edition of Who's Who in the East.
