A noted historian, writer and professor emeritus of history at Columbia University, Dr. Bulliet devoted nearly five decades of his life in service of academia. Initially hired by Columbia University to teach as an associate professor of history in 1976, he later earned the role of full professor just three years later. Prior to joining the faculty at Columbia, he lectured at the University of California at Berkeley and worked as both an instructor and assistant professor at his alma mater, Harvard University.
Dr. Bulliet has written extensively in his field. He has authored "The Patricians of Nishapur" in 1972, "The Camel and the Wheel" in 1977, "Conversion to Islam in the Medieval Period" in 1979, "The View from the Edge" in 1993, "The Case for Islam-Christian Civilization" in 2004, "Hunters, Herders and Hamburgers" in 2005, "Cotton, Climate and Canals" in 2009, and "The Wheel" in 2017. "Camel and the Wheel" notably received the Dexter Prize from the Society for History of Technology. Dr. Bulliet published six novels as well: "Kicked to Death by a Camel" in 1973, "The Tomb of the Twelfth Imam" in 1979, "The Gulf Scenario" in 1984, "The Sufi Fiddle" in 1991, "The One-Donkey Solution" in 2011, and "Chakra" in 2014.
Dr. Bulliet also found success co-editing "The Encyclopedia of the Modern Middle East" in 1996, co-authoring the world history textbook "The Earth and Its Peoples" in 1997, and editing "The Columbia History of the Twentieth Century" in 1998. Furthermore, he was the editor for the Journal of Iranian Studies between 1987 and 1990. In addition to his writings, Dr. Bulliet served as the host and narrator for the documentary series "The Middle East" in 1985.
Dr. Bulliet further excelled as a former executive secretary and member of the Middle East Studies Association, a non-profit association that fosters the study of the Middle East, promotes high standards of scholarship and teaching and encourages public understanding of the region and its peoples. He is also a longtime member of Phi Beta Kappa. The recipient of a John Simon Guggenheim fellowship between 1975 and 1976, he has since been featured in more than 30 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in the East between 1987 and 2011. Dr. Bulliet pursued an education at Harvard University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1962, a Master of Arts in 1964 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1967.
