After 37 years of service, Mr. Howard retired as a senior partner at King & Spalding, LLP in Atlanta, GA in 1993. First hired by the firm in 1956 as an associate attorney, he soon held the position of partner in 1960 before ultimately becoming a senior partner in 1966. Founded in 1885, King & Spalding's Atlanta office represents many large domestic and multinational corporations, as well as many middle market, entrepreneurial and high-growth companies and their financial backers. The firm notably has 20 offices across the United States, as well as abroad in such locations as Abu Dhabi, Moscow and Tokyo.
Involved with several professional organizations throughout his career, Mr. Howard was active with the American Law Institute, the Atlanta Bar Association, the State Bar of Georgia and the Lawyers Club of Atlanta. He also provided expert advice for several organizations outside of the legal system, contributing on the board of directors for Central Atlanta Progress Inc. Furthermore, Mr. Howard has excelled as a trustee and chairman for Wesley Woods Geriatric Hospital, a trustee and chairman of the Wesley Homes Inc. and a trustee at Oglethorpe University and the Lovett School.
In 2014, Mr. Howard obtained an Emory Law School Distinguished Alumni Award. Likewise, in 2018 he was recognized among the Emory Law 100 Most Influential Alumni and Faculty in a 100-Year History. Mr. Howard has been selected for inclusion in more than 50 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Law, Who's Who in the South and Southwest and Who's Who in the World.
Earning an undergraduate degree, magna cum laude, at Vanderbilt University in 1951, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, Mr. Howard then served for two years as a first lieutenant with the United States Marine Corps, including one year in Korea. Honorably discharged from active duty in 1953, he was encouraged to attend law school due to his interest in the educational process. Accepted into Emory University, Mr. Howard became one of the founding members and chairs of the Law School Council for several years.
Later, Mr. Howard also helped establish the Emory Law School Fund, which enabled alumni to give directly to the law school. In 1955, Mr. Howard graduated from Emory University and was soon after admitted to practice in Georgia.
