Dr. Gates has been a geologist and longtime faculty member at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, for the past 31 years. Taken on board in 1987 as an assistant professor, he has since become a tenured distinguished service professor in April 2016. He has also been serving as chairman of the department of earth and environmental sciences since July 2017, a role he previously held from 1994 to 1998 and again from 2001 to 2012. Specializing in tectonics with an emphasis on structural geology and deformational-chemical interactions, Dr. Gates has taught a number of courses over the years, including Planet Earth, Natural Disasters, Geologic Field Methods, Stratigraphy and Sedimentology, and Structural Geology. He formerly served as a senior scientist at New York State Geological Survey from 1990 to 1991, was a visiting assistant professor at Lafayette College in Pennsylvania from 1986 to 1987 and an exploration geologist at Chevron U.S.A., Inc., from 1981 to 1983.
Currently involved with the Palisades Interstate Park Commission as a scientific content advisor in Bear Mountain, NY, since 1997, Dr. Gates previously served in the same capacity at the Liberty Science Center in Jersey City, NJ. He was also the chief scientific content advisor for the Newark Museum and was on the executive board of the Newark Steam Coalition.
Dr. Gates has written extensively in his field. Authoring five books, including the third edition of "Encyclopedia of Earthquakes and Volcanoes" in 2006 and "Encyclopedia of Pollution" in 2009, he also authored several volumes and chapters to other books, edited one book, and authored and co-authored more than 50 scholarly journal articles. Furthermore, Dr. Gates was an editor, associate editor and served on the editorial board for several peer-reviewed journals and has reviewed several books and other publications.
A past president of the Geological Association of New Jersey and past president and current advisory board member of the New York State Geological Association, Dr. Gates is also an elected fellow and campus representative of the Geological Society of America. He is a member and faculty advisor of the Association of Environmental and Engineering Geologists and member of the American Geophysical Union and the American Association of University Professors as well.
The recipient of a Henry Rutgers research fellowship from Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, between 1987 and 1988, Dr. Gates also received more than two dozen grants and multiple awards over the years. He was recently honored with a Public Service Award by the Geological Society of America in 2017, received a Bright Spot in Hispanic Education from the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics in 2015, an Editor's Choice Award from the American Library Association in 2011, a Palisades Award from the Palisades Interstate Park Commission in 2002 and a Warren I. Susman Award for Excellence in Teaching from Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, in 2001, among many others.
Dr. Gates has been cited in the 60th edition of Who's Who in America. He has also been featured in many documentaries on television on the Discovery Channel, MSNBC and PBS for his expertise, including "Troubled Waters," which was featured on News21 in August 2014. Dr. Gates notably holds a Bachelor of Science from Stony Brook University and a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.
