Peter Pettibone was born on December 11, 1939 in Schenectady, New York to George H. Pettibone, an engineer at the General Electric Company, and Caryl Ketchum Pettibone, a school nurse. Peter attended public schools in Schenectady, played the violin and was the concertmaster in several school orchestras. He was active in scouting, became an Eagle Scout and was selected by his high school to attend Boys State in the summer of 1956. Peter went on to Princeton University in 1957 where he majored in the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, was in Army ROTC and was the captain of the Princeton Ski Team. Peter started studying Russian at Princeton and during the summer of 1960, between his junior and senior years, he went to the Soviet Union on grants from Princeton and the Carnegie Corporation with a group of college students all of whom spoke Russian. There he acquired material for his senior thesis on the teaching of American history in Soviet high schools. Peter graduated from Princeton in 1961 summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. He then went to the Harvard Law School where he earned his JD in 1964. Immediately thereafter, he went on active duty in the Army and was sent to US Army Headquarters in Heidelberg, Germany, were he served as a captain in the Intelligence Division. At the same time he also taught governmental affairs at Heidelberg University. Peter returned to New York in 1967 where he joined the law firm, Cravath Swaine & Moore as a corporate associate. While working at Cravath Peter acquired an LL.M degree from New York University, attending law school in the evening. In 1974 Peter moved to the law firm, Lord Day & Lord where he became a corporate partner in 1976. Peter's clients at Lord Day included the King Ranch, Volkswagen and CPC International. Peter opened a Moscow office for Lord Day in 1991 just after the collapse of the Soviet Union. It started as a one room office but expanded rapidly. However, when Lord Day & Lord dissolved in 1994 Peter moved his practice and the Moscow office to the law firm Patterson, Belknap, Webb & Tyler. He continued to expand the Moscow practice focusing not only on Russia but on Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Georgia and Azerbaijan. Following a financial crisis in Russia in 1998, Patterson Belknap decided to abandon a Moscow practice, and so Peter took his practice and the Moscow office to join with the Moscow practice of Hogan & Hartson. On the last day of 1999 Peter was the managing partner of the Moscow office of Patterson Belknap and on the first day of 2000 he was the managing partner of the Moscow office of Hogan & Hartson. The office continued to grow and by the time Peter retired from active law practice in 2010 and left Moscow, the office had 30 lawyers on staff and an additional 30 in support positions. The highlight of Peter's practice with Hogan & Hartson was representing the first three space tourists – Dennis Tito, Mark Shuttleworth and Greg Olsen – in their negotiations with the Russian space agency to fly to the International Space Station aboard Russian rockets. After Peter returned to New York in 2010, he became an independent arbitrator and mediator. He has arbitrated more than 15 international commercial disputes in New York, Stockholm and Moscow, with a third of those arbitrations being conducted in Russian. Peter is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, an accredited mediator by the Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution, is on the roster of mediators at the Commercial Division of the New York State Supreme Court and has been appointed a Special Master by the New York State Supreme Court, Appellate Division, First Department.
Peter married Jean Kellogg at a wedding held on Long Island in April 1966. After they returned from Germany they purchased an apartment at 1158 Fifth Avenue in New York where they still reside. In 1980 they purchased a summer home on Shelter Island, New York. Their two children, Stephen and Victoria, were born in 1971 and 1974. Stephen and his wife, Andress, have four children – Hannah, Kellogg, Parker and Beck – and reside in Wilton, Connecticut, and Victoria and her husband Adam Verost, have two children – Lily and Ethan – and reside in New York City.
Peter's outside interests include skiing in the US and Europe (he is a past president of the Amateur Ski Club of New York), music - both the violin and choral (he is a past president of the Canterbury Choral Society), fly fishing (he is the vice president of the Anglers Club of New York), sailing (Peter and Jean own a C&C 38 sailboat) and golf. Peter retains his ties with Princeton as president of Princeton's Class of 1961. He is active with the Church of the Heavenly Rest in New York (Episcopal) where he served on the vestry. He is also an active member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
He has been honored in numerous editions of Who's Who in Finance and Industry, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Law, Who's Who in the East and Who's Who in the World.
