Prior to obtaining these roles, she was First Secretary with the Department of Treaty and Law and the Department of American and Oceanic Affairs at the Chinese Foreign Ministry, and a summer law clerk with Pillsbury, Madison & Sutro, with Covington and Burling, with Paul Weiss, and with Arnold and Porter. Earlier in her career, Ms. Zhao was a U.S. desk officer with the Foreign Ministry of the People's Republic of China in 1972.
Ms. Zhao began her career as a student at Beijing Foreign Studies University, where she received a Bachelor of Arts in 1963. After relocating to the United States, she continued her studies with Harvard University, earning a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1983. She has been admitted to practice law in the state of Illinois and the District of Columbia.
A respected voice in her industry, Ms. Zhao has been active with a number of professional organizations. She is a member of the American Bar Association, the American Bar Foundation, the District of Columbia Bar Association, the Illinois Bar Association and the Chicago Bar Association, and she was also a member of the Beijing Foreign Economic Law Association. She is renowned for being the first citizen of the People's Republic of China to receive a Doctor of Jurisprudence in the United States and gain admittance to the bar, and the first to be admitted to practice law in both China and the United States.
Throughout her career, Ms. Zhao has been recognized for her contributions. She has been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Law, Who's Who in the Midwest and Who's Who of American Women.
