Robert J. Levine Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Levine, MD, FACP, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Levine celebrates many years of experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. With more than 50 years of professional experience, Dr. Levine has been professor emeritus of Yale University since 2016, having been professor of medicine since 1973. He was cofounder of the Yale University Center for Bioethics and served as its codirector from 2002 to 2008. He was co-chair of the executive committee of the Center for Bioethics from 2002 to 2008 and chair of this committee from 2009 to 2016. He served on the faculty for the Yale University departments of medicine and pharmacology from 1964 to 1973.

Dr. Levine also held a number of roles with the Yale-New Haven Medical Center, including chair of the institutional review board from 1969 to 2000, member of the medical staff from 1966 to 2016 (attending physician from 1968 to 2016) and chief of the section of clinical pharmacology from 1966 to 1974. Earlier in his career he was at the National Heart Institute as a clinical associate from 1960 to 1962 and as an investigator from 1963 to 1964.

Dr. Levine graduated from the Mepham High School in Bellmore, NY and was subsequently inducted into its Hall of Fame. He continued his education at Duke University and later earned the Doctor of Medicine, with distinction, from The George Washington University in 1958. From 1958 to 1960 he was at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston first as a medical house officer and then as a junior assistant resident. He was chief resident in medicine at the VA Hospital in West Haven, CT from 1962 to 1963. Dr. Levine is a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Throughout his career, Dr. Levine has been recognized for his contributions, having received the Distinguished Alumni Scholar Award from George Washington University. He also received the Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in Research Ethics from PRIM&R (Public Responsibility in Medicine and Research), and the Lifetime Award for Excellence in Human Research Protection from the Health Improvement Institute. The Academy of Pharmaceutical Physicians and Investigators gave him its Special Recognition award. The US Department of Health and Human Services presented him with the Outstanding Achievement Medal for his service as a Special Consultant to the National Commission for the Protection of Human Subjects of Biomedical and Behavioral Research; he was coauthor of the Belmont Report.

Dr. Levine has authored over 290 publications in professional journals. He has served as editor of Clinical Research (renamed the Journal of Investigative Medicine). He was the founding editor of IRB: A Review of Human Subjects Research and served as its editor from 1978 to 2000 (it is now renamed IRB: Ethics and Human Research).

He was author of several books, most notably 2 editions of the highly influential Ethics and Regulation of Clinical Research.

Dr. Levine has played an important role in the development of US regulations for the protection of human subjects, as a special consultant to the National Commission for the Protection of Human Subjects of Biomedical and Behavioral Research, and in the development of international guidelines for clinical research as chair of committees of the Council for International Organizations of Medical Sciences and the World Medical Association.

Dr. Levine has been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the East, and Who's Who in the World.
