A successful career that dates back to 1985, he formerly worked as a senior controls engineer for Assembly and Test Worldwide in Lebanon, MO, controls engineer for Weldun International Ltd. in Bridgman, MI, and as a senior vice president of S&A Automated Systems, Inc., in Boca Raton, FL, among prominent other roles.

He has conducted extensive research in intrinsic reactor safeguarding, process-control integration requirements and has served as a principal investigator for numerous innovative industrial control methodologies. He also holds multiple patents in the field of packaging machinery and mechanisms.
Throughout his career, Dr. Spurlock has consulted for NASA Headquarters in Washington, DC, and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, CA. He also served as a session organizer for ICES Life Support Controls in Colorado Springs, CO, and was a session chairman for the organization in Seattle, WA. He is a longstanding member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, the American Nuclear Society and the New York Academy of Sciences.
One of the highlights of Dr. Spurlock's career was during the 1990s when the industry was trying to move forward with the physical-chemical life support technology for the space program. Helping to pioneer some of the work, he anticipates that some of it will be utilized for missions to Mars in the future. Taking an interest in science and mathematics in middle school, Dr. Spurlock was equally involved in the arts. At the conclusion of a saxophone solo in high school, he was offered a full scholarship to Tulane University for his musical talents. He instead turned to chemical and nuclear engineering. He has notably held a Bachelor of Science in nuclear engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology since 1985 and a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in physics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology since 1987 and 1989, respectively. His dissertation was titled "Prediction and Control of Electromagnetic Perturbations in a Plasma Field."
Born in Atlanta, GA, Dr. Spurlock later married his wife Hope J. Spurlock. He has two children. In his free time, he enjoys playing the saxophone, keyboard and guitar and supporting local music pedagogy. He also loves performing and listening to jazz music.
