Dr. William J. Schneider is a plastic and reconstructive surgeon who has been practicing medicine for more than 40 years.

Dr. Schneider is a plastic and reconstructive surgeon who has been practicing medicine for more than 40 years. Most recently, he was a QA consultant with ReSurge International from 2007 to 2018. ReSurge was the first international humanitarian organization to provide free reconstructive surgery in developing countries, primarily to children with cleft lip and palate and burn scar contractures. From 2008 to 2011, he simultaneously served as an AAAASF Inspector and a wound care and HBO consultant at the Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center. Previously, he acted as the chief medical officer with Interplast for five years beginning in 2002. His first professional position was in private practice in Knoxville, TN, from 1977 to 1999 where he performed the entire range of both reconstructive and aesthetic plastic surgery. He served as a board member of the Knox County Chapter of the American Cancer Society from 1980-1982. He has written multiple papers, chapters and monographs primarily in the field of plastic surgery. He has also made numerous medical presentations both in the United States and in other locations around the world.
Outside of his primary endeavors, Dr. Schneider served as the chief of the department of surgery with the Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center in 1986 and with the Children's Hospital in 1982. Dr. Schneider volunteered his time for ten years by performing reconstructive surgery with Interplast, now known as ReSurge International, between 1992 and 2002. Considering these volunteer experiences one of the highlights of his career, he is proud of his work in providing free reconstructive plastic surgery for poor and underserved children in developing countries in Asia, Africa, South America, and Central America both for ten years as a volunteer and five years full time as the Chief Medical Officer. His last ten years serving as the Quality Assurance consultant brought the total number of years he was associated with the humanitarian organization Interplast/ReSurge International to twenty-five.
Elected as a life fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Dr. Schneider has also been active as a member and past president of the Tennessee Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons. Furthermore, Dr. Schneider is a life member the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. He was the chair of the ASPS Volunteers in Plastic Surgery Committee from 2007-2010. He was previously a member of the of the Southeastern Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons, Knoxville Academy of Medicine, the American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association and the Tennessee Medical Association during which time he served twice as a TMA delegate.
Locally, he enjoyed spending his time as both a coach and the commissioner for West Knoxville Youth Baseball between 1978 and 1985 and was also the president of Westborough Neighborhood Association in Knoxville during 1986. Furthermore, he was a volunteer naturalist with Ijams Nature Center in Knoxville, TN, from 1999 to 2003. In his free time, he enjoys hiking, creating miniature dioramas, and nature photography. He has been married to Rebecca Phillips for over fifty years. They are the parents of three sons.
Before entering the field, Dr. Schneider pursued a formal education at numerous respected academic institutions. He notably earned a Bachelor of Science from Stetson University in DeLand, FL, magna cum laude, in 1966. While at Stetson he was the president of the freshman, sophomore, and junior classes and his senior year he was president of the SGA. He was elected as a member of Omicron Delta Kappa men's honorary society. He followed this accomplishment by receiving a Doctor of Medicine from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, TN, in 1970, where he held the role of president of the junior class. At Vanderbilt he was honored each year as a Justin Potter Merit Scholar. He interned in surgery at and completed a year of general surgery training at the University of Florida, both from 1970-1972. He completed his surgery and plastic surgery residencies at Emory University in Atlanta, GA, between 1972 and 1977. He is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
In recognition of his accomplishments, Dr. Schneider was named a Stetson University Distinguished Alumnus in 2004. He has been cited in approximately a dozen editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare and Who's Who in the South and Southwest in honor of his devotion to medicine.
