With 40 years of professional experience, Ms. McGhee has been an undergraduate dance professor and choreographer with the University of South Carolina since 2010, as well as a graduate dance professor, choreographer, and consultant with the University of North Carolina at Greensboro since 2016. Prior to obtaining these roles, she was dance education coordinator and graduate program coordinator with the University of North Carolina at Charlotte from 2007 to 2010. Ms. McGhee has been recognized as associate professor emeritus of dance and director emeritus of the Interdisciplinary Arts for Children Program at the College at Brockport, State University of New York, since 2007, having served in both roles since 2002.
From 2000 to 2002, Ms. McGhee was an associate professor in the Winthrop University department of theatre and dance, and from 1997 to 2000, she was the director of the Southeast Center for Dance Education at Columbia College. She served as a senior teacher with the Boston Renaissance/Edison Project Partnership School from 1994 to 1997. In this role, she was the first dance teacher at the first charter school in the nation. She was the director of outreach programs, resident artist, and a teacher with the MJT Dance Company from 1988 to 1994. Earlier in her career, Ms. McGhee was a resident choreographer and booking and touring manager with the Mandala Folk Ensemble from 1984 to 1988 and a company director, movement education and dance instructor with Salisbury State University from 1978 to 1982. Overall, she had a performance career of 16 years with modern dance companies and as a specialist of various cultural styles, including Mexican, Israeli, East European, American ballroom, popular dance, and indigenous dance.
Ms. McGhee was interested in dancing and performing from an early age, and her interest was further inspired by a choreographer of Mexican dance who later became her first professional partner. She began her career as a student at James Madison University, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in elementary education and dance in 1976. In 1978, she subsequently earned a Master of Science in dance. Later in her career, she completed a Graduate Certificate in women's and gender studies and continues with doctorate dissertation research at the University of South Carolina.
Throughout her career, Ms. McGhee has been recognized for her contributions, having won a Virtual Reality Environment Award, a Magellan Award, and an online course development grant from the University of South Carolina. The professor is a recipient of a National Dance Education Organization (NDEO) Top Citation for Best Research Presentation. She has also received a Maryland Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance Meritorious Service Award and the MJT Dance Company Artistic Vision Award. She received an Outstanding Service President's Award from the South Carolina Dance Association and awards from the Winthrop University Research Council.
Ms. McGhee has been recognized as a Coolidge Fellow from the Association for Religious and Intellectual Life of Columbia University, New York. She is a grantee of Salisbury State University Foundation awards, the College at Brockport, State University of New York technology awards, the National Endowment for the Arts and Harlem Dance Foundation awards. Likewise, she is an Academic Program Improvement Grantee of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and a Dana Foundation Interactive Technology Co-Grantee with the New Jersey State Department of Education. Professor McGhee has served on executive boards of the World Dance Committee for the International Council of Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance, the NDEO, and continues in leadership roles with a national think tank on the future of dance in higher education. She was critical to states and the national arts educational standards movements and to the Arts in Basic Curriculum Project of South Carolina. She served on committees appointed by two states Superintendents of Education. She was acknowledged for Contributions to Dance Education by Fidelity Investments at an American Ballet Gala and was invited to an International Education Policy Round Table at Oxford University. In her free time, Ms. McGhee enjoys art, music, travel and swimming.
