He also earned a Master of Divinity from Emory University and has been certified as a director of libraries, where he has worked since 1981. He commenced his career as a teacher and principal at Lee County Public Schools in Virginia, where he worked from 1950 to 1954. He retired in 1993 and has since been independently consulting.

After becoming interested in library science and media two years later, he soon pursued the field and succeeded in an array of notable positions, including media specialist for public schools in Gwinnett County and Rockdale County in Georgia, director of library services at South Georgia State College, coordinator of the learning research center at Tennessee Technological University, media specialist at South Georgia State College and associate professor of library media at Delta State University. He has also been a consultant to the Upper Cumberland Regional Library System in Tennessee.
Knowledgeable in a variety of fields, Dr. Pitts has contributed several articles to relevant professional journals. He maintains memberships with his local Masons Club, as well as Pi Delta Kappa and Phi Kappa. Due to his professional excellence, Dr. Pitts was honored in Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, and Who's Who in the World.
