Since 1999, Dr. Pitot has been recognized as a professor emeritus of oncology and pathology and laboratory medicine at the University of Wisconsin. A member of the medical school faculty since 1960, he also served the University of Wisconsin as acting dean of the medical school and the chairman of the pathology department. He further completed a postdoctoral fellowship on campus in the McArdle Laboratory from 1959 to 1960. Prior to joining the University of Wisconsin faculty, Dr. Pitot excelled as an instructor of pathology at the Tulane University Medical School from 1955 to 1959.
A prominent pathologist, oncologist and expert in carcinogenesis, Dr. Pitot contributed his expertise as the director of the University of Washington's McArdle Laboratory between 1973 and 1991. Established in 1940 as one of the first basic cancer research facilities in the world, the Laboratory's program in experimental cancer research was made possible by the generous donations of private citizens. Dr. Pitot has also found success as the author of four editions of "Fundamentals of Oncology."
Dr. Pitot was elected as a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the New York Academy of Sciences. He was active as a past president of the Society of Experimental Biology and Medicine, a lifetime member of the American Cancer Society and honorary member of the Japanese Cancer Society. Dr. Pitot is also a member of multiple other organizations, including the Society of Toxicologic Pathologists and the Society of Toxicology.
Inspired by his grandfather, who was a successful pharmacist for many years, Dr. Pitot initially earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry at Virginia Military Institute. He then continued his education at Tulane University, graduating with a Doctor of Medicine and a Doctor of Philosophy in biochemistry. Moreover, he has been a diplomate of the American College of Pathology since 1960. In 1995, Dr. Pitot obtained an honorary Doctor of Science from Tulane University.
In 2005, Dr. Pitot accepted a Distinguished Service Award from the Association of Pathology Chairs, a Lifetime Distinguished Alumnus Award from Tulane University Medical School and a Gold-Headed Cane Award from the American Society of Investigative Pathology. Previously, the Society of Surgical Oncology presented him with a Lucy J. Wortham Award in 1981. Dr. Pitot has been selected for inclusion in every edition of Who's Who in America between 1987 and 2014 and more than 40 editions of Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Science and Education, Who's Who in the Midwest and Who's Who in the World throughout his career.
