James Daniel Johnson received a Distinguished Performance Award from the Los Alamos National Laboratory in 1988.

With more than 40 years of professional experience, Dr. Johnson was head of the Sesame Library from 1989 to 2005, simultaneously serving as deputy group leader in the Theoretical Division of Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). Prior to obtaining these roles, he was project manager of the carbon in detonations project from 1984 to 1989 and acting head of the group from 1982 to 1985. Earlier in his career, Dr. Johnson was a staff member with LANL from 1976 to 1989. Since retirement in 2005 he is a guest scientist at LANL.
Dr. Johnson began his career as a student at Case Institute of Technology, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in 1966. He subsequently studied at Stony Brook University, completing a Master of Arts in 1968. He concluded his studies with the university in 1972, earning a Doctor of Philosophy. He then joined the Rockefeller University as a research associate from 1972 to 1974, serving in the same capacity with the Los Alamos National Laboratory from 1974 to 1976.
A respected voice in his field, Dr. Johnson has been an active leader in his community. He is a member of the American Physical Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Los Alamos Ski Club. A contributor of articles to professional journals, he was the co-creator of the Sesame Equation of State Database and he was a member of the U.S. delegation at nuclear testing talks. He has been an adult advisor to the Boy Scouts of America, an adult advisor of the senior high youth group at the United Church of Los Alamos, and he is affiliated with the Los Alamos Light Opera Organization and the Los Alamos Little Theater.
Throughout his career, Dr. Johnson has been recognized for his contributions. A grantee of the U.S. Air Force, the U.S. Army, and a National Science Foundation fellow, he received a Distinguished Performance Award from the Los Alamos National Laboratory in 1988. Dr. Johnson has been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in the West, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
