Jacqulyn Buglisi Recognized by Marquis Who's Who for Excellence in Performing Arts

Ms. Buglisi celebrates 25 years of dance leadership as Artistic Director of Buglisi Dance Theatre



    NEW YORK, NY, January 16, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Jacqulyn Buglisi has been included in Marquis Who's Who. Ms. Buglisi is the Co-Founder/Artistic Director/Choreographer of Buglisi Dance Theatre (1993-present); former Principal Dancer with the Martha Graham Dance Company (1977-1993); master teacher of the Martha Graham Technique since 1971, Chair of the Graham-based Modern Department at the Alvin Ailey School for over 25 years and served on the faculties of The Juilliard School, Martha Graham Center of Contemporary Dance, and the Aspen Festival; Founder the first school of contemporary dance for the community of Spoleto, Italy; and dance advocate, having served on the Dance/USA Board of Directors as Chair of Artistic Directors Council.

A sought after choreographer, Ms. Buglisi dance commissions include The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, The Joyce Theater Foundation, Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival, Ailey 2, The Richmond Ballet, The Juilliard School, The New York Flamenco Festival at Sadler's Wells London and New York City Center, The Charlotte Ballet, the Prague International Festival, The Chautauqua Festivals, The River to River Festival NYC, Ice Theater of New York, University of California, Santa Barbara, and Marymount Manhattan College, to name a few. Dance/NYC named Ms. Buglisi a "New Yorker for Dance" for her annual Table of Silence Project, a commemorative 9/11 performance ritual for peace on the Josie Robertson Plaza, Lincoln Center reaching through live steaming half a million people in all 50 United States and 129 countries and recognized by Proclamations from NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio and NYS Governor Andrew Cuomo for uniting the community through dance.

At the early age of four, Ms. Buglisi began her dance training with the acclaimed Russian ballet teacher Mme. Swoboda and continued her studies in the Mary Wigman technique at the Boston Conservatory of Dance Young Peoples Program with Jan Veen. She is a graduate of the famed High School of the Performing Arts in New York City, the alma mater of movie stars Robert De Niro, Ving Rhames, and Al Pacino, as well as the current director of the Shakespeare Theatre Company Michael Kahn. In 1969, Ms. Buglisi traveled to study at the Universita per Stranieri in Perugia, Italy, which has had a similarly notable pedigree. While in Italy she was a founding member and choreographer of Teatro Danza Contemporanea di Roma and in 1973 returned to New York City, as a member of the Pearl Lang Dance Theater. In 1977 she was invited to join the Martha Graham Dance Company becoming a Principal Dancer, she toured the world and is featured in the PBS film Conversations with Martha Graham, and in the CBS National broadcast of the Kennedy Centers Honors, performing in honor of Ms Graham. In 1989, she had her ballet Sospiri premiered during the 1989 NY City Center Season of the Martha Graham Dance Company, which is now performed in the repertoire of BDT. In film she is also featured in the PBS, Trailblazers of American Modern Dance.

Ms. Buglisi believes that movement is a basic element of human expression and that joy and inspiration flow from its wellspring. "Using images, literature, poetry, heroic archetypes and a consuming physicality, I craft dances that explore human relationships revealing the bold visceral strengths, humor and exquisite vulnerabilities of the individual, and through fusing art and science bring awareness to social justice, and environmental issues facing humanity today" J. As Artistic Director of Buglisi Dance Theatre, Ms. Buglisi strives to connect to the global community, with a long history of collaborations including the composers Tan Dun, Jennifer Higdon, Libby Larsen, Paola Prestini, Daniel Bernard Roumain, Glen Velez, Daniel Brewbaker, Andy Teirstein, and Paula Jeanine Bennett; cellist Maya Beiser, Cassatt String Quartet, New York Choral Society, and the Syracuse University Symphony Orchestra and Singers; Venezuelan environmental artist Jacobo Borges; Italian visual artist Rossella Vasta; mannequin maker Ralph Pucci; lighting designers Jack Mehler and Clifton Taylor; projection designers Jan Hartley, and currently with the acclaimed Wendall K. Harrington, Head of Projection Design at the Yale School of Drama, and Emmy Award-winning composer Jeff Beal for her Moss Anthology project.

Creating nearly 100 ballets, Ms. Buglisi was awarded the 2016 Italian International Lifetime Achievement Award at the Fini Dance Festival for distinguished years of performing arts excellence, National Endowment for the Arts Choreography Fellowship, The American Dance Guild Award, The Kaatsbaan International Playing Field Award, The Altria Award for Choreography, Fiorello LaGuardia Award for Excellence in the Field of Dance. Her dance company is dedicated to interactive educational residencies, workshops, and community involvement through outreach programs in collaboration with many fine universities, public schools, and artistic institutions. In recognition of the company's contribution to the American dance field, the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center has filmed and archived the company repertoire for public viewing in the Jerome Robbins Archive of the Recorded Moving Image. Ms. Buglisi has been featured in The New York Times Arts & Leisure, Dance Magazine, Huffington Post, and on the cover of Dance Teacher Magazine.

Artistic excellence and world-class production values have won Buglisi Dance Theatre invitations nationally and internationally to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts' "Dance in America" series that featured the full length ballet "Runes of the Heart"; the Brooklyn Academy of Music Opera House; Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival; Vail International Dance Festival; Syracuse University residency and performance at the Crouse Hines Theater featuring Buglisi masterpiece Requiem with full orchestra and chorus; Teatro Nuovo, Milan, Italy; Melbourne State Theater, Australia; the Rovereto Festival, Italy; and the Rishon LeZion Festival, Israel, among others. In 1996, BDT was invited to perform at The Joyce Theater, NYC's preeminent venue for contemporary dance, where BDT continued to perform its annual NYC seasons through its 20th anniversary season. BDT's performs in free, outdoor festivals including the annual Battery Dance Festival, The Joyce Theater's Evening Stars; and the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council's River to River Festival.
