After earning a Bachelor of Science in nutrition with honors from Cornell University in 1974, Dr. Benack Evans obtained a Master of Science in biology and nutrition from Cornell University in 1975. Soon attaining an assistantship with her alma mater, she eventually completed a Department of Energy graduate fellowship at Columbia University. As she continued her academic efforts, Dr. Benack Evans graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy in biochemistry from the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, fulfilling a predoctoral fellowship in cell and molecular biology from the National Institutes of Health.
Studying at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, Dr. Benack Evans accepted a Welch Foundation postdoctoral fellowship in protein chemistry and a Cecil and Ida Green postdoctoral fellowship in molecular physiology from the National Institutes of Health. She began her career with the Department of Energy from 1975 to 1977 as a physical scientist with the human and health studies division in the environmental measurements laboratory. Dr. Benack Evans also studied atmospheric transport, fate and decay modeling for several substances with the Atomic Energy Commission in the health and safety laboratory.
Dr. Benack Evans later held multiple roles with the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, the U.S. Air Force Technical Application and the Defense Threat Reduction Agency. As her career progressed, she excelled as the director of the Biodefense Lab Center for Disease Control and Prevention Select Agency Program Registration. Working in program management of the U.S. Army Life Sciences Test Facility at the Dugway West Desert Test Facility, Dr. Benack Evans developed and implemented technology in order to support chemical and biological defense and health initiatives in both civilian and military medical protection from 2005 to 2006 and with the National Medical Intelligence Center and the Department of Homeland Security from 2006 to 2008,
Building her career with the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute for Infectious Disease, Dr. Benack Evans went on to lead a team of 180 professional staff on a support services contract with the Department of Defense, generating an annual gross revenue of $17 million. Also involved with the Food and Drug Administration's Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, she worked for the Applied Nutrition Adverse Reporting System in post-market surveillance, monitoring and organizing incident reports resulting from regulated products. From 2010 to 2012, she was active with the U.S. Navy Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, the Naval Health Research Center and the Naval Medical Center of San Diego. Celebrating a career that spans more than four decades and drawing upon a significant work ethic, Dr. Benack Evans is currently working as the chair of the evaluations committee for the ARCS National Foundation.
Notable for her considerable experience in biotechnology and health research, Dr. Benack Evans was appointed to the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute for Infectious Diseases scientific advisory board from 2005 to 2006 and the Cornell University HEAA board of directors from 1995 to 1999. She has served the Biochemical Journal as editorial advisor, the Journal of Molecular Endocrinology as editorial reviewer and the American Journal of Physiology as editorial reviewer, among other editorial positions with prominent publications. Also interested in civic undertakings, Dr. Benack Evans contributed to the National Science Foundation in 1996, the National Sea Grant Program in 1992, the American Cancer Society of Central Florida from 2000 to 2001, the Sigma Xi National Annual Meeting in 1996, the Cornell University Alumni Association of Central Florida and the Paul A. Srere Symposium Committee, among other organizations.
Dr. Benack Evans maintains affiliation with the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, the Protein Society, the Biochemical Society, the Association of Women in Science and the International Association for Women Bioscientists. She is also a member of her local chapter of Sigma Xi, the Air Waste Management Association, Toastmasters International, and Who's Who International. Celebrated in Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Dr. Benack Evans has been presented with numerous awards, including the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Award for the 15th International Union of Biochemistry in 1991 and the Protein Society Award for the 4th Symposium of the Protein Society in 1990.
