Initially inspired to pursue a career in the pharmaceutical industry at age 12, when he got his very first job at a pharmacy soda fountain, Dr. Yakatan began his education with a Bachelor of Science in pharmacy from Temple University in Philadelphia in 1963. Deciding to advance his knowledge further, he earned a Master of Science from Temple University in 1965 and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Florida in Gainesville in 1971. Currently serving as chairman and chief executive officer of IriSys in San Diego, which he founded in 1996 as a means of helping smaller companies progress to clinical trials, Dr. Yakatan also heads the company's strategic consulting services.
Beginning his career as an assistant professor at the University of Texas at Austin in 1971, Dr. Yakatan spent nearly a decade with the university, progressing to the role of associate professor from 1976 to 1980. Following this appointment, he became involved with Warner-Lambert, now part of Pfizer Inc., as director of pharmacokinetics and drug metabolism, eventually advancing to vice president of worldwide product development. Dr. Yakatan was appointed to the position of executive vice president of research and development at Immunetech Pharmaceuticals before he founded Tanabe Research Laboratories in 1990 and Avanir Pharmaceuticals in 1998, serving both companies as chief executive officer until 1995 and 2006, respectively.
Due to his demonstrable excellence in his field, Dr. Yakatan received fellowships from the National Institutes of Health from 1965 to 1969 and of the National Science Foundation in 1964. He was also presented with Outstanding Pharmacy Alumnus Awards from the University of Florida and Temple University, among a number of other honors. Celebrating a life containing considerable professional accomplishment, Dr. Yakatan is particularly proud of establishing the daycare for children of married students at the University of Florida, which still exists to benefit the current students at the university.
A registered pharmacist in the states of Florida and Pennsylvania, Dr. Yakatan is also an elected fellow of a number of professional organizations, including the American College of Clinical Pharmacology, the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists and the American Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences. Furthermore, he has been a regular contributor of articles to professional journals throughout his career. In light of all his accomplishments, Dr. Yakatan has previously been selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare and Who's Who in the West, the 57th edition of Who's Who in America and the 34th edition of Who's Who in Finance and Business.
