Dr. Brooker is a clinical neuropsychologist who has been in private practice since 1992. As a retired U.S. Air Force officer, he initially pursued his field to help soldiers suffering with post traumatic stress disorder. First serving as a rehabilitation counselor for the State of California between 1973 and 1975, while in the military, he interned in clinical psychology at the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Medical Center in Ohio. He later became a clinical psychologist and chief of psychological testing at the U.S. Air Force Hospital in Wiesbaden, Germany, between 1978 and 1981. Dr. Brooker then became a clinical neuropsychology officer for the Department of Mental Health at Travis Air Force Base between 1982 and 1985 and chief of the mental health clinic and psychological services between 1985 and 1986.
From 1986 to 1992, Dr. Brooker has been active as a military consultant in neuropsychology for the Surgeon General of the U.S. Air Force. He was also a vocational expert for the Office of Hearings and Appeals with the Social Security Administration and an assistant chairman in the department of mental health at Travis Air Force Base between 1986 and 1992.
An elected fellow of the Society of Air Force Clinical Psychologists and the Pennsylvania Psychological Association, Dr. Brooker is also a longtime member of the International Neuropsychological Society and the Affiliated Board of Examiners. He is a former vice president of Voluntary Action Center in South Lake Tahoe, CA, and the Central Sierra chapter of the California Human Services Organization. He notably received a Division 19 Military Psychology Award from the American Psychological Association in 1981.
The recipient of several honors for his time served in the Air Force, Dr. Brooker received a Decorated Air Force Achievement Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal and two Meritorious Service Medals. For his work in the field, he received a Merit Award from the California Department of Rehabilitation and California State University, Sacramento. He has been showcased in several editions of Who's Who in the West and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
Dr. Brooker earned a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from Chapman University in 1971, Master of Science in rehabilitation counseling from California State University, Sacramento, in 1975, and Doctor of Philosophy in counseling psychology from Kansas State University in 1977. He soon after completed a residency in medical psychology specializing in neuropsychology at the University of Oregon School of Medicine and Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, OR, between 1981 and 1982. Before retiring in 2016, Dr. Brooker was a licensed psychologist in the states of Texas, Alaska, Pennsylvania, Colorado and California, is a certified rehabilitation counselor, and is a diplomate of the American Board of Professional Psychology and the American Board of Clinical Neuropsychology. Dr. Brooker served in the military between 1968 and 1992. He served as an inactive reservist between 1992 and 2002.
Born in Madison, WI, Dr. Brooker later married his wife in 1972. He has two sons. Outside of his work interests, he was active with the Wiesbaden-American Ski Club. He also enjoys running. In fact, in 2003, Dr. Brooker ran a marathon in support of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in Sacramento, CA. He ended up raising $17,500 for a child in need.
