With over 40 years of professional excellence to his credit, Dr. Katti currently serves as a distinguished curators' professor of radiology and physics at the University of Missouri. Having held this position since 2009, he initially joined the university as a professor of radiology in 1990. Today, he is also active as the director of the Institute of Green Nanotechnology. Having conducted an incredible amount of research over the course of his career, his most groundbreaking research involved understanding the role of high antioxidant phytochemicals and harnessing those electrons from various plants for the production and transformation of gold and other metals into tumor and disease specific nanomedicine agents. This unprecedented discovery has earned Dr. Katti global acclaim and he has been dubbed the Father of Green Nanotechnology by Nobel Laureate Norman Borlaug.
Furthermore, Dr. Katti's discoveries in green nanotechnology have formed the genesis of connecting the 10,000-year-old practice of Ayurvedic medicine with modern nanotechnology. This usage is now referred to as nano-ayurvedic medicine. As of 2018, the United States Patents and Trademarks Office has allowed the use of Nano Ayurvedic Medicine as a trademark for various medicinal preparations containing herbs and metals for holistic health purposes. With his discovery having an incredible impact in the field of oncology, Dr. Katti was awarded a $5 million grant by the National Cancer Institute for his work establishing one of only 12 Cancer Nanotechnology Platforms at the University of Missouri due to his pioneering and innovative research on the discovery of radioactive gold nanoparticles.
In addition to this groundbreaking discovery, Dr. Katti holds an additional 12 patents for other pharmaceutical discoveries, including tumor-specific PET and SPECT radioprobes and therapeutic gold nanoparticles, and has been the recipient of numerous awards for his extraordinary research contributions from the United States, India, Brazil, Germany and Australia. An elected fellow of the St. Louis Academy of Science, the National Academy of Inventors, the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Royal Society of Chemistry, he has also received multiple honorary Doctor of Science degrees from such prestigious institutions as the Sam Higginbottom University of Agriculture, Technology and Sciences and Karnatak University in India. Dr. Katti has also been honored with an Outstanding Missourian Award, the George Hevesy Medal International Award, and the Gauss Hall of Fame Award by the Gottingen Academy of Sciences, and he was named one of the 25 Most Influential Scientists in Molecular Imaging in the World. Most recently, the University of Missouri Alumni Association honored him with the Faculty Alumni Award in 2017 for his lifetime achievements in research in drug discovery and translational research. In 2016, he also received the Person of the Year in Science Award from India, the first such award given to a faculty within the University of Missouri Systems.
Dr. Katti is further a prolific author whose visionary discoveries are punctuated by over 350 peer-reviewed publications, reviews, book chapters and peer-reviewed abstracts. The principal inventor on over 50 patents and over 150 inventions, he has served as the executive editor of multiple scientific journals, including the Journal of Theoretical and Applied Physics, and the founding executive editor of the International Journal of Green Nanotechnology. He has also maintained editorial board positions for the American Journal of Medicine and Medical Sciences, Cancer Management & Research, the Journal of Nanotechnology, Science and Applications, and the Journal of Inorganic Chemistry.
Prior to embarking on his career, Dr. Katti pursued an education at the JSS College of Karnatak University in Dharwad, India, where he received a Bachelor of Science in chemistry, physics and mathematics in 1977. Continuing his academic efforts with a Master of Science in education from the Regional Institute of Education, Mysuru, in India in 1979, he earned a Doctor of Philosophy from The Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore in 1985, where he conducted research on a new class of chemical compounds, phosphorus-nitrogen compounds and phosphazene polymers. Following these accomplishments, he spent time as an Alexander von Humboldt research fellow at the University of Gottingen in Germany from 1985 to 1987, where he completed work that ultimately led to his work with SPECT cancer imaging later in his career. From this role, Dr. Katti went on to hold the position of research associate at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada, from 1987 to 1990, before he began his work at the University of Missouri.
In recognition of outstanding contributions to his profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, Dr. Katti has been featured on the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement website. Please visit www.ltachievers.com for more information about this honor.
