Ms. Smallwood wrote columns for The Detroit News and other newspapers and magazines and serves as a literary judge, reader, and mentor.

Beginning her career in education, Ms. Smallwood taught at Michigan Public School between 1961 and 1964, had a family, moved into the role of Title I Library Consultant for forty-three public libraries administered through the Library of Michigan, 1976-1977. She then served as a head media director for Pellston Public Schools in Michigan, where she remained for 20 years between 1977 and 1997. Ms. Smallwood also served as the assistant director at the Northland Library System in Alpena, MI, during 1977 and was the developer and operator of the Educational Materials Clearinghouse from 1981 to 1983 before becoming an adult education teacher at Cheboygan Area Schools from 1985 to 1986.
Locally involved, Ms. Smallwood devoted her free time as a charter board member of the Cheboygan Area Arts Council. She was also the president of the Cheboygan County Humane Society and the co-founder of the Humane Animal Treatment Society.
Ms. Smallwood has been the recipient of multiple awards, including a National Federation of State Poetry Societies Award, Eric Hoffer Award for Prose and ByLine First Place for First Chapter of a Novel Award. She was also a Franklin-Christoph Poetry Contest Winner, received multiple Pushcart nominations and was a nominee for the Society of Midland Authors Award in Poetry by Finishing Line Press. She has been cited in approximately 40 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the Midwest, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of American Women. Ms. Smallwood notably earned a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Arts in history from Eastern Michigan University in 1961 and 1963, respectively, followed by a Master of Library Science from Western Michigan University in 1976.
Married to the late Dr. T. M. Smallwood, Ms. Smallwood has two children and four grandchildren.
