Essie Rutledge Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

    MACOMB, IL, January 22, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Essie Manuel Rutledge, Ph.D., with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Rutledge celebrates many years of experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. With nearly 50 years of professional experiences, Dr. Rutledge was bestowed the title of Professor Emeritus (of Sociology) by Western Illinois University in 2006 after having been Chair/Professor of the African American Studies Department from September 1976–December 1984; and Professor of Sociology from 1985–June 2006. Prior to these positions, she was an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of Michigan – Flint from 1974–1976; and was a National Teacher Fellow/Assistant Professor of Social Sciences at Macomb County Community College, Warren, Michigan, 1968–1971. Earlier in her career, Dr. Rutledge was an Instructor of Social Sciences at Gibbs Junior College, from 1961-1965, and at St. Petersburg Junior College from 1965-1967, both in St. Petersburg, Florida; and was a social studies teacher at Sixteenth Street Junior High School, St. Petersburg, Florida, 1958–1961.

Dr. Rutledge began her career as a student at Florida A&M University, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology, 1958. She later attended the University of Wisconsin, completing a Master of Arts Degree in Sociology, 1965. Subsequently, she earned a Doctor of Philosophy Degree (Ph.D.) in Sociology from the University of Michigan, 1974. Dr. Rutledge was also certified as a specialist in aging by North Texas State University Center for Studies in Aging in 1986.

Throughout her career, Dr. Rutledge has been recognized for her many professional and civic contributions, some of which include an "Emerita Profile," a publication of the American Sociological Association (ASA) Newsletter, Footnotes; and received the A. Wade Smith Award for "Teaching, Mentoring, and Service" from the Association of Black Sociologists (ABS); inducted into the University Professionals of Illinois Wall of Fame; enshrined in the College of Arts and Sciences Gallery of Distinction by Florida A&M University (1987), established during the University's Centennial Celebration (1987). She received a Certificate of Appreciation from WIU's Department of Women Studies, and the GFWC Macomb Women's Club; and the Roy Wilkins Civil Rights Leadership Award from the NAACP Illinois State Conference. Western Illinois University presented her with the Affirmative Action Director's Award, the Faculty Excellence Award, the Outstanding Advisor, and the Outstanding Faculty Award. In addition, the President of WIU requested Dr. Rutledge be interviewed for the television/video program, "Across the Miles" (now archived). The program is composed of individual interviews which consist of personal experiences and knowledge as related to the interviewees' years at WIU or their relationship with the University. Dr. Rutledge's interview highlights her sociological knowledge about diverse/multi-cultural perspectives related to her 30 years at the institution. In the community, she was the first recipient of a new award instituted by the McDonough County Democrat Coalition and Democratic Party, the "Essie Manuel Rutledge Humanitarian Spotlight Award for Social Justice in Action" (named in her honor); and has most recently been selected by the Macomb Feminist Network to receive its 2019 (March 2019) Writing Women into History Award. Dr. Rutledge has been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the World, and Who's Who Among American Teachers.

Dr. Rutledge has published articles in academic journals, chapters in edited books, served as a guest columnist for newspapers, and has provided commentaries to National Public Radio. Her research and academic areas of expertise include family dynamics, especially Black families, socialization, racial and social inequality (gender and social class), quality of life and aging.
