Ms. MacDonald is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and infidelity specialist who helped establish The Shepherd's Center for Counseling Services (a.k.a. Shepherd's Center Counseling) in 2001, a Christian counseling group, in Gig Harbor, WA. In private practice since 1987, she specializes in marital and family counseling, healing from infidelity, depression, singles' issues, adolescents, conflict resolution, women's issues and co-dependency. Using various approaches with her clients, including role-playing, Lifespan Integration, and healing prayer therapy, she tries to make each client feel as comfortable as possible, while also teaching them various strategies to resolve conflict, gain new coping skills and think differently. She often leads a therapy group, called "Grippers," for folks who've been betrayed and abandoned by their spouses. In addition to counseling patients, Ms. MacDonald has been serving as the clinic administrator at the center since 2013.
Over the course of her career, Ms. MacDonald has helped establish two other Christian was counseling groups: Pearl Counseling Associates in Tacoma, WA and Discovery Counseling Associates in Bellingham, WA. She did her 18-month counseling internship with Lutheran Social Services in Seattle, WA, and was a designer and director of the lay counseling training program at Calvary Northshore in Bothell, WA. Prior to entering her field, she was a dental hygienist for 15 years in the Seattle area, beginning in 1973.
A workshop presenter, therapy group leader and author, some of Ms. MacDonald's workshops have included "The Healing Power of Apology," "Forgiving the Unforgivable," "Mind Over Mush" (Re: healthy dating) and "Healing Abandonment Grief." In 1979, she authored the one-act play "Broken Heart," which has been performed at many youth camps, churches, street ministries, and schools over the past 35 years. "Broken Heart" has been viewed in person or on television by more than 3.5 million people world-wide. In 2010, Ms. MacDonald authored the book "How to Help Your Spouse Heal from Your Affair" in 2010, which has sold over 70,000 copies as of 2018. The book is geared toward unfaithful partners who wish to repair the damage and gain a second chance with their spouses. It is available on Amazon.com as a paperback, audio or Kindle e-book. She is now working on a future book that will deal with the challenge of healing from infidelity alone.
Ms. MacDonald is a member of the American Association of Christian Counselors, the Family Systems Therapists Northwest, the Pierce County Counselors Association, the Puyallup Consult Group and the Christian Counselors Network. Locally involved, she volunteers and has been a pastor's wife for DuPont Community Presbyterian Church since 2010. She formerly served as a leader of Young Life, trained college-age leaders, was chairman of the Bellingham and Gig Harbor Fundraising Banquets for many years, and co-chair of the Adult Young Life Committee in Gig Harbor.
Chosen for the "Best of Gig Harbor in Counseling and Mental Health" award in 2015 and 2016, Ms. MacDonald has also been cited in the 21st edition of Who's Who of American Women. She received her Bachelor of Arts from Antioch University in 1985, and a Master of Science in Marriage and Family Therapy from Seattle Pacific University in 1988.
Married to Dan J. MacDonald, Ms. MacDonald has two children, two step-children and seven grandchildren. When she isn't busy with her work, she enjoys spending time with her family and extended family.
