Dr. Efner worked in chemistry for his entire career. Beginning as a resident research associate at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, DC, in 1975, he soon after accepted a research chemist position at Phillips Petroleum Company in Bartesville, OK, in 1977. Working his way up to senior research chemist in 1982, he then served as a research specialist for the organization for another eight years between 1991 and 1999 before ultimately retiring from the organization.
Phillips Petroleum Company was an American oil company incorporated in 1917 that expanded into petroleum refining, marketing and transportation, natural gas gathering and the chemicals sectors. In 2002, Conoco, Inc., merged with Phillips Petroleum to form ConocoPhillips, becoming the third largest integrated energy company and second largest refining company in the United States. The company later split and was renamed Phillips 66, the brand name and trademark used by the original Phillips Petroleum.
During his career, Dr. Efner contributed multiple articles to various professional journals in his area of expertise. He also holds several patents in his field. He is an elected fellow of the American Institute of Chemists. He is a longstanding member of the American Chemical Society and Alpha Chi Sigma and former member of the Society of Plastics Engineers and Sigma Xi. He is also an active member of the American Radio Relay League, a non-profit organization for amateur enthusiasts.
Included in the 22nd and 23rd editions of Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Dr. Efner was also the recipient of a Graduate Research Award from Sigma Xi in 1975. He has notably held a Bachelor of Science in chemistry from Eastern Michigan University since 1967, Master of Science in chemistry from the University of Iowa since 1971, and Doctor of Philosophy in organic chemistry from the University of North Dakota since 1975. After completing his bachelor's degree, he served two years as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army between 1967 and 1969.
Born in Ann Arbor, MI, Dr. Efner later married his wife Carolyn Janet Cedergren in 1970. He has one daughter. In retirement, Dr. Efner enjoys amateur radio, General Class Call Sign KF5RGU. He also enjoys doing pottery and photography.
