With nearly 40 years of professional experience, Dr. Hevner has been a professor at the University of South Florida since 1994. Prior to obtaining his current role, he was a professor at the University of Maryland from 1981 to 1994, where he also served as chair of the information systems department from 1987 to 1993. Earlier in his career, he was an assistant professor at the University of Minnesota from 1979 to 1981.
Dr. Hevner began his career as a student at Purdue University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in 1973. He continued his studies with the university, completing a Master of Science in 1976. He concluded his education in 1979, earning a Doctor of Philosophy.
Dr. Hevner is one of those rare researchers whose work has had international, fundamental impact in several areas throughout the course of his career, beginning with his doctoral research in the 1970s which resulted in the first feasible distributed query optimization algorithms (adopted commercially by organizations including Honeywell). He has also been a pioneer and leader in Cleanroom software engineering – a theory-based, team-oriented process for the efficient production of high-quality software systems. Most recently, Dr. Hevner has been a primary driver and thought leader in the use of design science in the field of computer information systems. Throughout the 2000s the need for more relevant academic research resulted in a greater focus on the design science research paradigm which seeks to extend the boundaries of human and organizational capabilities by creating new and innovative artifacts.
A respected voice in his industry, Dr. Hevner has been an active leader in his community. He is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers' Computer Society, the Association for Computing Machinery, the Association for Information Systems, and the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences. He is the author of several texts in relation to his areas of expertise, and he has contributed more than 200 articles to professional journals.
Throughout his career, Dr. Hevner has been recognized for his seminal contributions. He was a Parnas Fellow at Lero, the Irish Software Research Centre at the University of Limerick and a Schoeller Senior Fellow at Friedrich–Alexander University Erlangen–Nürnberg in Germany. The Department of Computer Science at Purdue University honored him with the Outstanding Alumnus Award in 2018. He is further a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a Fellow of the Association for Information Systems. He has been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in Finance and Business, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
